MattyW Posted November 21, 2024 Posted November 21, 2024 Hey guys, does anyone know where Supra CAT8 Ethernet wire can be purchased in bulk? I’m looking into it for the in wall runs for an upcoming home build and have no idea where it can be found.
Volunteer El Tel Posted November 21, 2024 Volunteer Posted November 21, 2024 Thread moved into the appropriate sub. As always, you do you. After all, nobody does it better. With that said, I know that there is a shortfall of knowledge and a fair amount of misinformation around in this domain. Additionally, not all members would have read many related posts on category ratings and use cases. To that end, what follows, constitutes the main considerations to ensure people are adequately informed. You may already be aware that the speeds in domestic environments do not warrant a non-domestic, data-centre-specific standard Ethernet category rating. You may also be aware that the inherent design of twisted-pair cabling rejects EMI too. A shield acts as an antenna for radio/EMI waves and risks the introduction of interference where there was none prior. Unless you are terminating the shields at either end on the punch-down blocks and/or plugs, then you will be out of spec too. Lastly, the cable you mention is actually designed for patch cable use and is not designed for in-wall use. It is not likely to meet fire-rafting specs for in-wall use and could cause you insurance concerns in the event of an issue/claim. Enjoy. 3

Insurance is a prime consideration. I may go with Aqua H2O Networks - Cat 7 Shielded Ethernet Cable (S/FTP) Edited November 22, 2024 by MattyW
Volunteer El Tel Posted November 22, 2024 Volunteer Posted November 22, 2024 CAT7 is not a proper IEEE/ANSI type standard. It is a proprietary spec dreamed-up by a loose coalition of companies rather than an appropriate standards body. https://www.cablematters.com/Blog/Networking/what-is-cat7-and-why-you-don-t-need-it Again, if you believe in shielding despite the issues it can cause with attracting interference and/or creating common ground planes if it is terminated properly, then go procure some CAT6 SFTP. Panduit or R&M would be my go-to. 2
