Thanks for the link, watched it again, on a positive note at least Mark fixed it, still a bit in shock over the price thou.🤐

When I was on the Hoffman forums there was a lot of comments about the Tom Evans stuff failing compared to other makes at the same price point. However, I am not on Hoffman forums anymore because the majority of comments come from needy, ignorant blowhards. They must really miss me!

I watched this video when it first came out (I am a subscriber to the Mend It Mark channel) and maybe I wasn't watching very attentively, because I didn't pick up that the phono stage had been sent to Mark from the manufacturer or that it had been damaged in transit.  In fact, the main thing that interested me was how Mark would react to a piece of current 'audiophile' equipment, given that he mainly deals with older gear, some of which may have been high end in its time, or professional equipment, such as the Yamaha and Crown amps he repaired, both of which were fairly beaten up.

I am no technician, but I thought that Mark's overall impression of the phono stage was favourable, for example the extreme steps taken to suppress noise.  Of course, he couldn't resist a few harmless comments about the construction of the case and other features of the design, but certainly nothing that anyone would get their knickers in a knot about.  Reading between the lines, I think he was taken aback by the price, but there again, he's a tech and we all know that techs don't view the pricing of equipment from the standpoint of the average person.

However, the reaction of Tom Evan Audio Design was OTT and self-defeating, as a five-minute phone call to a PR expert would have confirmed.  A visit to the Tom Evans website will quickly tell you why.

And a follow up video:

This reminds me of the DCS and Tekton fiascos. Dieselgate also comes to mind. There is such a thing as bad press. The coverup is always worse than the crime.

We now have a better idea about the order of what happened when in this matter, and the last vestiges of sympathy which I might have had for the small manufacturer (Tom Evans Audio) have disappeared.

A disgraceful way to treat a customer who purchased  his top of the line product, and Mr Evans hubris has come back to bite him on the backside.

On a product at this price point, many makers (both large and small) offer extended warranties - in some cases lifetime warranties which are transferrable to later owners).

Why on earth did Mr E. treat a customer with such disrespect  and basically create the "shitstorm " in which he now finds himself?

G'day all, a very interesting thread, and I am glad to see that the original Mend it Mark video has been reuploaded by quite a few on youtube!

I regard Mend It Mark as the best repair technician around, and I have personally learned quite a bit from his faultfinding expertise!  I think that Tom Evans unfortunate attitude has been a serious mistake.

Long live Mend It Mark!  We need people like you.  Regards, Felix.

While I agree with a lot of the comments here and Mark does great work it seems that he has done a lot of grand standing as well. He could have used his heat detector first up and just replaced the faulty part.

According to the PFM guys his follower numbers has increased significantly from all the controversy.

There are a lot of things Tom Evans should have done - like repair the thing for free. This would have avoided all the bad press.

Having seen the internals of this phono there is no way I would buy one even if I could afford it.
