Jeddie Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 (edited) I retired on Oct 30 after 44 odd years with a large multinational company. I went into the office (I wfh usually) and admittedly there was a fire evacuation and we were sent home after a few hours. So no farewell card, no farewell gift, no nothing. Just a handshake from the MD. Edited November 12, 2024 by Jeddie 1 6
Dolphy Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 That's terrible management! Sorry to hear, I hope you enjoy retirement. 1

Wow...sorry to hear that @Jeddie I would have thought that management and your team would have put together a small morning tea celebration to recognize your retirement and contributions to the company. But then again, this doesn't surprise me one bit these days. Something funny that I could share, years ago i worked on a project to delivery an enterprise wide contract management system for the Legal and Procurement division for a year. We all went out to the local pub with the team and the EA of the sponsor told us all that the Sponsor had given approval for a round of drinks on his corp card up to the value of $50. There were 12 of us and some of us had to do with a glass of water for the first round! So we paid for our own drinks and food. Glad i dont work there anymore. Sadly I so far from retirement (many..many years), cant wait for that day to come.... But more importantly enjoy your retirement and new found freedom! Edited November 12, 2024 by MrBurns84 2
Kaynin Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 It depends on what your expectations are. When I retired I was offered whatever I wanted - a dinner, lunch or simply a coffee. I chose nothing, just rode off in to the sunset. I'd like to say that I'm sure they'll call and set something up, but it's coming up two weeks... I hope you enjoy retirement, your time is now your own. 5
Jeddie Posted November 12, 2024 Author Posted November 12, 2024 We have arranged an informal get together at the pub next week with current and past employees. I am loving retirement! 7 1

I am loving retirement! Enjoy your send-off. It sounds like those who will be there will be because they want to, which is what you really want. That was why I chose nothing, too many new faces that didn't really mean anything. Have a few words prepared! 2 1
Whites Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 @Jeddie that's sad to hear after such long service. Unfortunately it's similar where I work in a NSW government department. I received a certificate of appreciation for 30 years of service a couple of years ago, when I joined you used to get a gold watch for 30years. I am not expecting anything when I retire next year after 38 years. 1

Mr 57 Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Congrats on your retirement @Jeddie. That’s brilliant ! Andythiing is spot on, get out and enjoy it. It might feel weird transitioning from “saving mode” to “spending mode” but it does happen. A really smart financial advisor in your corner will make the world of difference. This is going to be some of the best times of your life….you’re going to love it. Enjoy !! 5
muon* Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Congrats on retirement, hope it is not only a new, but also a positive time. 5
cafe67 Posted November 15, 2024 Posted November 15, 2024 Jesus and I thought working for the govt for 40 years was average. But congratulations on your retirement, I'm enjoying mine so far ( nearly 4 months) 5

Just a handshake from the MD. Mrs CE has been with her mob for over 40 years and she's not even 60 yet (or "40th attempt at 21"). She's a bit annoyed that they won't even admit she's been there for 30 years as they had a reorganise about 29 years ago! She won't get to 44, as I think we'll call it a day in early '26 - and she has over 12 months of long-service leave to use up prior to that!!! Edited November 19, 2024 by Cloth Ears 3
