Keith_W Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 FYI, Dante is a worldwide networked pro audio standard, similar to Ravenna, AES67, and AVB. Audinate does not manufacture DAC's - they publish the standard, write the software, and make some solutions. Unlike Ravenna and AES67 which are open source, Dante is proprietary meaning that anybody who manufactures a Dante enabled product pays license fees to Dante. The industry has embraced Dante, there are dozens of products that are Dante enabled. Why choose Dante, or any other networked audio standard? One reason is because of the possibility of unlimited growth. If you need 200 DAC channels, you can buy a dozen 16 channel DAC's and hook them all up together. The network cable carries the clock data, and all devices are slaved to the network's clock. There are other good reasons. You can use your existing network infrastructure. A network cable is tiny and easy to route, compared to dozens of optical or XLR cables. The solution is robust with few points of failure. You can transmit audio hundreds of meters away. So you can see that Dante is a good choice where multiple speakers spread over a large location is required. Airports, stadiums, outdoor concerts, movie theatres ... you get the idea. It is vast overkill for a 2ch system. But it might make sense if you have a multichannel HT system.

Audinate also sell Dante hardware adapters and software such as a virtual soundcard. This puts them into the categories of Digital Sources and Computer Audio (which are the 2 other categories bedside DACs) in this sub forum.
