7502dan Posted November 3 Posted November 3 Hi all,I’ve been running two rel subs with my coral beta 10’s with great results.I noticed that the standby feature switches on on one of them.I tried switching them out, switching them off and on,putting an isolation transformer in front of one.The issue remains.I eventually found a solution, three pins to two pins converter to power cable on both sides (no earth)I tried to contact Rel with no success.Any suggestions as to what the issue is?Thanks
almikel Posted November 17 Posted November 17 I don't understand the issue? Are you saying on one of the subs the standby works normally, ie sub turns on when music is played, but the other sub doesn't turn on when the music is played? Disconnecting earth connections is not recommended - it can render the gear unsafe. Mike
7502dan Posted November 17 Author Posted November 17 No Mike. They are both working fine. When they are not getting any signal they are supposed to go in to standby and wake up when signal is sensed again. As soon as one goes into sleep mode the other stays on as if it receives signals to stay awake, and it’s either of them, not like a specific one .As soon as I put on both a two pin power plug converter the fault disappears. They are both switch in and out as they receive signal or not,in other words, they work as they should.

Just be aware that any gear that's not double insulated is meant to have an earth connection at the mains plug. Gear that is double insulated will have this symbol: Typically OEM audio gear that comes with a 230V power lead with an earth pin is not double insulated. As they say in New Hampshire USA, "live free or die"... ...in Australia we say, "earth connections are there to save your @ss" - disconnect them at your own risk! Are both of these Rel subs connected via the speaker level inputs or low level RCAs? Mike
7502dan Posted November 20 Author Posted November 20 They’re both connected via speaker level input Mike.I am thinking maybe there’s something wrong with the house wiring?connecting both to ground closes a circuit?I only know that when I use those 3to2pin adapters they switch on and off as they should.. Thanks Dan

It's possible...but I wouldn't blame that yet! 8 hours ago, 7502dan said: I only know that when I use those 3to2pin adapters they switch on and off as they should.. Using that adaptor plug deliberately disconnects the equipment chassis earth from the house earth. This is not recommended! Should a fault develop in a piece of gear with a normally connected chassis earth, it would/should trip the RCD in your meter box immediately. If the same fault developed in a piece of gear where you've disconnected the chassis earth, the RCD may not trip until you or a family member have provided the earth path for the RCD to trip ...hopefully it trips before someone is hurt . 9 hours ago, 7502dan said: They’re both connected via speaker level input Rel have built their reputation and brand around how much better their high level speaker connection is compared to low level RCA connection to subs... ...but the interweb is littered with examples (especially bridged amplifier outputs) where the Rel high level connections create problems. 9 hours ago, 7502dan said: Two different wall plugs on opposite side of the room If these wall plugs are on different house circuits, it's possible this is causing your Rel's to have a conniption. Without any actual issue in the house wiring, it's entirely plausible there could be a tiny differential in the earth pin voltages across different house circuits. Try running both subs and your amp from the same wall plug with a power board without the 3 pin to 2 pin connectors - all 3 devices will have the same chassis earth connection to house earth. Do the subs turn on and off as they should? If it fixes the issue, keep your amp and both subs on the same house circuit - run a lead to the 2nd sub. Almost always, power points on the same wall close together will be on the same house circuit. Preferably use a power board for low power draw devices (pre-amps, CD players, laptops, streamers etc), and plug high power draw devices (like amps) directly into a power point. If this doesn't fix the issue, you have another example of Rel subs doing something funky with their recommended high level speaker connections For the record - I'd greatly prefer to leave the chassis earth connected, and I wouldn't care if the subs never went into standby mode...compared to disconnecting the chassis earth, which potentially is a hazard. cheers, Mike
7502dan Posted November 21 Author Posted November 21 Thanks for the advice Mike,I will try to connect like you advised from the same power point ,even if just to prove that it fixes the problem.I’ll need to run some extension cables.Of course I don’t like the idea of no Ground, that is the reason I tried (unsuccessfully)to contact Rel, and also to ask here. Thanks again Mike 1
