Type 1 Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 So, I’ve been trying to refine the folded Voigt pipe type of speaker for a while now and have completed version 9, with lots of trial screwed together ideas in between. The baffle construction seems to be the moSt important thing in this design of speaker…. It’s not a MDF Bass Reflex box that you can condition with a crossover filter… you need to allow the particular Full Range driver to Excel in its Environment… Yer I know that’s pretty Organic for many minds… Getting the speaker to “breathe” through the baffle seems to be very important! The music has so much detail, nothing is forced, plenty of bass and bass detail! I don’t feel that I need to continue this experiment, until I hear something better! 1 1
aussievintage Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 So, nine versions. I only built three, and shouldn't even really count the first one, so really, only two versions Basically I built a pair of test "pipes" to hear the result on a cheap old fullrange driver I had heard in other situations(Rola/Plessey C8MX ). After listening for a while I decided the concept worked and bought some Fostex drivers and built a folded pipe design suited for them based on some calculations I gleaned from some internet sites. So mine are just MDF, fully glued (no screws). No doubt they could be improved, but I really enjoy them still. They are playing Radio Paradise (mellow) in the next room right now.
Type 1 Posted October 28, 2024 Author Posted October 28, 2024 Hi Logic probe. Sb Acoustics full range 8 inch driver. It’s cheap… but with some hours on it, in the right box is pretty impressive! Aussie Vintage… if I had to pay for the materials and machining for the various models to get to this quality, I think people would think that I was insane.. trying something out is a good exercise in how we listen!!
rockeater Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 Don't know how it sounds but it sure looks impressive!
Type 1 Posted October 28, 2024 Author Posted October 28, 2024 Thanks Roman! The baffle is a little darker than I prefer, but as it’s made mostly of 30mm slices of hardwood LVL samples, the end grain absorbs more stain than normal! It might surprise some people, but all nine Versions sound different, despite being almost identical in design and dimensions, but not construction or materials. So these have the best detail and separation of any of them, from top to bottom.. so much so that with some tracks where there is annoying harshness in the background, it separates the sounds so it seems not as harsh, because you can better hear the other sounds of a similar frequency around it. And no shortage of bass to my ears. For the moment I’m very happy with them!, And sorry I don’t have a CD player for you to fix, but I’ve had plenty of trouble from NAD in the past!!!
Type 1 Posted October 31, 2024 Author Posted October 31, 2024 So, I had a spare pair of “endgrain” baffles, that were a bit bendy, so I reinforced the back of them with 2 plywood strips, then I screwed them into my “ screw together “ box (this box other than the baffle is just plain 25mm hardwood plywood without any of my usual improvements) to see how they compared to version 9. The Lady wife thought that the sound lacked some of the refinement of version 9, and I agree, yet they were very exciting to listen to. To, me, for this type of speaker, it’s seems that the “LVL” baffle is probably the most important improvement, and I have tried many. 1
