Volunteer sir sanders zingmore Posted October 21 Volunteer Posted October 21 Very sad, the first two Maiden albums are up there with my favourite https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/oct/21/paul-dianno-early-frontman-for-iron-maiden-dies-aged-66 3
maxspl Posted October 25 Posted October 25 Very sad to hear of his passing. Had the pleasure of seeing Paul twice with Iron Maiden in 1980. First time was in June 1980 at Middlesbrough town hall when Dennis Stratton was still in the band. This gig was amazing and to this day one of the best gigs I have ever been to. Second time I saw them was in November 1980 at Redcar coatham bowl. Dennis had been replaced by Adrian Smith. Still a great show but a step back from that fast heavy punky first show. Very disappointed when they kicked Paul out of the band and replaced him with Bruce Bruce as he was calling himself then , out of Samson. I saw Samson when they supported Uriah Heep and thought he was a major poser who talked too much cracking lame jokes between songs etc. Saw Maiden with Bruce twice in 1982 , once at Newcastle City Hall and again at the Reading rock festival. No arguing that technically he is a better singer but Maiden lost what was unique about them at the time. And still too much lame banter between songs. And then Maiden kick Clive Burr out of the band....aaaargh ! This is the last straw , every line up change a step down and they become just another mainstream metal band. I've seen them many times since then including just a few weeks ago at Perth Arena and they are still a great band but a pale shadow of the mighty band of the very early days. R.I.P Paul Di'Anno 1

R.I.P Paul Di'Anno Lucky you, seeing Maiden with Di’anno and Burr (I think Nico is a great drummer but their drum sound changed after Burr left and was never as good - imho). I saw Di’anno solo in Melbourne many years ago. He was pretty bitter but his voice was amazing… particularly on the “ballads” like Remember Tomorrow”. Spine tingling stuff 1
