Vinylear Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 I updated Windows 11 yesterday and after the reboot wouldn't you know it my desk top was black and I lost sound. Trawled the internet for my favourite background image, set that and brought up CC cleaner did a scan and it reinstalled the sound for me. I'm not tech savvy so all that was an effort. Why is computing so hard? 1
BioBrian Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 I've found Windows updates to be a bit strange lately. Most obvious is that the machine shuts down and I get a black screen for 5 or 6 minutes before it shakily comes back and starts to act normal. It's tempting to switch the power off, thinking it's done its thing, but that might break it completely. Other thing is that it keeps doing massive downloads of updates (luvvit) and then tells me my computer is inadequate and they've decided they can't use the update. Over and over, using up my paid data allowance.
aussievintage Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 Windows just keeps getting worse. I find it unbelievable what Windows users have to put up with. I get stability, speed, small fast updates, and peace of mind by using Linux. Pick one of the user friendly distros like Mint if you care to try. I suspect Apple's OS is also better than Windows these days (it being sort of based on a unix type system as well). A bit more expensive though and harder to switch to.
Addicted to music Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 Never update an operating system unless you know all your drivers especially the main ones you use are certified to the latest version. Usually when newer version of windows comes out I usually wait for at least 18mrhs. 1
MattyW Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 Honestly, I find my wifes MacBook to be flaky as f@3k these days as well and problem is when it acts up I don't know how to fix it. At least with Windows I can sort of nut it out. Not a fan of the latest update though how it takes screen shots of everything. Gotta turn that crap off.
Dolphy Posted October 21, 2024 Posted October 21, 2024 Sometimes the 3rd party software is what causes errors. I've been a happy windows 10/11 user for as long as I can remember. I'm an early adopter and I don't have any critical software on my PC. My only gripe with W11 are the nuances and minor changes. Which in time I get used to.
MattyW Posted October 21, 2024 Posted October 21, 2024 Pretty sure support ends to 10 very very soon.... So no more patches or security updates. Very worthwhile updating to 11 for this reason alone.

Might at that time dual boot and have 10 for games and a Linux distro for general internet. Edited October 22, 2024 by muon*

Basically you use the Windows 10 installer to install the 11 image. Has worked for me on every system I've used it with. Zero problems with the installs also. Edited October 21, 2024 by MattyW

I had hoped for better. The two companies (Microsoft and Apple) don't seem to care about quality anymore now they think their stranglehold on the market is unassailable.
MattyW Posted October 21, 2024 Posted October 21, 2024 Pretty sure it was Google led the way with Beta in production with GMail many many moons ago now and the entire software industry sat back, took note and have followed suit. Must be 17 years or so ago now if memory serves.
muon* Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 Well I looked at any possible advantage of 11 over 10 now, and they are non existent for me, so will stick with 10 till end of service.
Dolphy Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 Windows 10 support will end October 2025, and MS will stop the free win10 to win11 updates shortly (i think). You might need to take this into consideration when deciding on staying on Win10.
MattyW Posted October 23, 2024 Posted October 23, 2024 Really, easiest thing is run a Linux distro on a MiniPC for internet use from a security standpoint, and stick with Windows for games. Then security really doesn't matter. Switch between using a KVM. Updates only matter when security and reliability are of concern though sooner or later stuff doesn't work due to lack of updates also. Just how it is. At home I've enough tech to look after with 2x Windows 11 Pro PC's, a Macbook, Raspberry PI, Synology NAS DS1621 then there's firewall/router, network switch, wireless mesh and all that jazz. I rather wish Roon would release their client software for Linux as then I'd get rid of another Windows box in favor of Linux. I find both Apple and Windows a royal PITA and would rather not worry about them. Everything else largely updates itself or emails me to tell me I need to sign in and update something.

For now I'm sticking with Windows for my office/games PC. I'd love to transition away from it though as I find the update cycle a royal pain in the @rs3. 1

You might need to take this into consideration when deciding on staying on Win10. I'm pretty sure the cutoff date for getting a free update to Win 10 to Win 11 was on either late last month or earlier this month. I've been waiting for the new Intel Arrow Lake CPU's to be released so I can build a new beast of a PC specifically as a music DAW, and the current PC I built in 2019 , that has Win 11 on it will become my day to day workhorse for everything else. Microsoft had/has a Massive update for Win 11 that you might not have installed yet, your PC might be queued to download and install it soon. Be prepared for your PC to be unusable for a hour at least while this update occurs, it will depend on how your PC is configured and available space on your C/ drive on how long it takes. I know Win 11 comes with a hell of a lot of useless bloatwear that will get installed on a new PC automatically, but by using a 3rd party installer, you can avoid a lot of it ever being installed in the first place. I've been following a IT guy on YouTube that has made such a installer, he has also made a rather disturbing discovery regarding the new Recall feature in Win 11, from going through the code he has found that "File Seach" needs Recall to be installed for it to work. He doesn't say it outright, but he is strongly implying that this is actually a backdoor for Microsoft [or any government ] to find out what is on your computer. The first video below he did was 2 weeks ago, he then made another video I'll post below it clarifying the current situation......it doesn't look good TBH. Edited October 24, 2024 by Tweaky

Meh, I always get the free upgrades as it saves me money. Meh, I see no value in Recall so it’s always been in my list of things to turn off. I don’t need it storing everything. SSD’s have a limited number of writes before failure and I see no value in Windows taking screenshots of everything for the off chance that I may someday need it. What a waste of storage and drive life. Bugger that.

This is more of a one off super large update since Win 11 is intended to be the last numbered version of windows { you can bet your last dollar that Microsoft intend to bring in a subscription model for Windows at some stage ], I think I read that this big update is basically being called Win 2024, or something like that. Although there have been problems on some peoples PC's that have had the update installed, TBH I'd wait a couple of weeks and then do a manual update. I think the backlash would be so huge if Microsoft tries to bring about a subscription model, especially for businesses, people will flock to Linux in droves if they can make the change over. Any enterprising young coder should be looking ahead and start building programs that can replace windows programs, but running on Linux, there will eventually be a huge market for them Edited October 24, 2024 by Tweaky 1

Dolphy Posted October 24, 2024 Posted October 24, 2024 For those of you complaining about your privacy and windows 10/11. If you're using an Android or an IOS device, have I got news for you! Unfortunately, as technology improves and gets updated it will come with caveats. We have been the product for a very long time. Moving over to Linux isn't an option to the majority of the population. They are either unaware that it exists or are not technical enough to understand it. I've tinkered with Ubuntu and Mint over the years. It does almost everything.
muon* Posted October 24, 2024 Posted October 24, 2024 My phone uses GrapheneOS, and I have no Apple devices.
