Hi all,

I was hoping for some advice

I recently rescued the family Garard 401 with an Acos Lustre GST 1  that has been sitting on a stoarage shelf for 20 years

The current plinth is essentially unuseable and I have a new one being built

The tonearm has the original headshell with a Shure V15 III - unfortunately I was only getting one channel and a resistence test shows the cart has failed

My understanding is that is a classic cart - so thats unfortunate

Anyway - I dont know much about the turntable side of things and only yesterday came accross the term "compliance" and now I'm a bit lost

Before I heard that term I was leaning towards a MP-200 or possibly the MP-500 based on reviews

Would they be good options?  for the Acos Lustre

Should I be considering alternatives in the price range of the above 2 carts?

Appreciate any feedback and advice

Cheers

Just a general observation, it is easy to spend a lot of money on a cartridge.    I don't know how you arrived your chosen price range, but I would suggest checking out the AT carts in the range - the AT540 or 740ML.  Even consider the VM95ML - the cheapest cart with that ML stylus shape.

Thanks for taking the time to reply - honestly, I'm not sure how I got that price range.  I feel I'm down so many rabbit holes at the moment I was hoping to not go down another one and spend the next 3 weeks researching cartridges and compliance and dialing in my tolerance re price point / diminishing returns.

Based on a quick search and read, the VM540ML you mentiond seems like it might be a better starting point for me

Appreciate the intel

The 540 and 740 are the same basic cart,  only the body is alloy on the 740. The 540 will likely be a better match weight wise.

The 95ML is fantastic for the money,  i wouldn't discount it.
