Stocky_Perth Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 Hi I have recently purchased a Technics SL-6 linear tracking turntable and would like to change the stylus as I don’t know the history of this one. The cartridge is the original (EPC-P23) Is there any Australian retailers selling these stylus. I can only find overseas stores such as LP gear. Is there any recommendations on where to purchase a replacement stylus. Thanks

A couple of big stylii companies stopped importing into Australia so perhaps in this case just easier to grab it online.

LP Gear is fine if you're in the states otherwise the shipping can add up for a simple purchase. you could try Japanese based operators, but I've found their websites there a headache at times to work thru... when you are looking you might see that the $$ difference between a new stylus and new cart is not that much. you might want to consider a new cart... the AT VM95 family would be a good place to start - simple established design at good price and with several stylus options including some more sophisticated cuts. I understand if you're trying to preserve the TT's original sound character, it can become a frustrating endeavour
mkaramazov Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 (edited) As @Hydrology and @wasabijim state, it's an uphill run finding p mount cartridges or replacement stylii in Australia. However, if you search for an Audio Technica AT85 Elliptical, including on that famous auction site, you will find an Australian retailer that sells one. This is a bonded eliptical stylus, which is, I believe, what the EPC P23 was. You can get this for under $100 and in my opinion comparable to the P23 in performance. There are other pathways. For example, if you acquire a Ortofon OM-P body, you could run any OM stylus up to an OM 40. Alternatively if you find an Audio Technica AT102P or AT112EP body, you can then run a range of styli including modern micro lines, such as the ATN VMN540. ( @wasabijim as far as I am aware there is no p mount offering in the AT VM95 range). Finally Jico and Black Diamond do provide replacement quality stylii for the EPC P23, though you will need to order from overseas. @Stocky_Perth you are welcome to DM me for advice, I have had a fair bit of experience with Technics linear decks and P- Mount cartridges. Stocky_Perth Posted October 18, 2024 Author Posted October 18, 2024 Hi guys. thanks for the responses. I think to get me going quickly I will purchase the Audio Technica cartridge. I then have a bit more time to explore some of the other options suggested here. Thanks again 1
