< For those who rock, we salute you! Medieval to Metal: The Art & Evolution of the Guitar tours to Ballarat, Victoria this October. Exclusive to the Art Gallery of Ballarat, the exhibition features 40 iconic guitars on loan from the National Guitar Museum (USA) alongside an awe-inspiring assemblage of photographs, paintings, drawings, illustrative designs, and objects.

The far-reaching collection of classical to contemporary works on display track the history of the world’s most popular instrument from its medieval beginnings through to the guitar’s pivotal role in blues, country, and rock ‘n’ roll.

Celebrate the history and stories behind the instruments that made the stars. Experience up close rare guitars and artefacts in this epic exhibition narrating the history, evolution and design of the guitar covering all music genres and all uses.

Through this all-encompassing exhibition, music lovers can trace the history of the world’s most popular instrument through a nostalgic photography collection of iconic images taken by renowned rock photographer Neil Zlozower alongside photographic works by Australian music documenter Tony Mott.

Starting off as ouds and lutes, through to acoustic and electric, guitar makers and luthiers have experimented with shapes, materials, accessories, and design to find the perfect blend of beauty and sound. Medieval to Metal encompasses the journey of the guitar through creativity, innovation, and cultural catalysts.

From medieval beginnings through to the guitar’s pivotal role in pop culture, the exhibition will include a collection of music-inspired masterpieces from Australian institutions and newly acquired works in the Art Gallery of Ballarat collection, representing almost two centuries of music symbolism in culture and art.

Medieval to Metal: The Art & Evolution of the Guitar is exclusive to the Art Gallery of Ballarat. >

< Rose City Band’s country psychedelic rock evokes the wide-open spaces of the American west and free spirits who call it home. The project of acclaimed guitarist and vocalist Ripley Johnson, Rose City Band has extended beyond the studio and lives in tandem as a live ensemble featuring some of the finest players in contemporary rock.

Their latest album Garden Party is a celebration of summer and all it brings: communal gatherings, the respites offered by nature, and an appreciation for even the simplest beauty, from 12-foot sunflowers to a contorted carrot planted in the spring.

Freedom, contentment, and joy were the sources for the songs. From the soaring guitar solos to the driving rhythms, the elegant pedal steel lines to the organ grooves, Garden Party has a live band’s energy captured in exquisite detail.

Joining Rose City Band on this aural psychedelic odyssey is local Ballarat outfit Dayfever.
