kiwilistener Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 Anyone else seeing a sharpish rise in turntables recently? In 2022 I bought a new AT-LP2x turntable. One of the few auto turntables available at the time. I knew I didn't want a manual turntable as my knees don't appreciate jumping up every twenty minutes - plus I'm lazy, I've always had auto's my last really good one being a 1977 Technics sl-1300 the first version and boy do I regret selling it. In the interim I've had an Akai & Marantz both auto's neither of which were as good as my Technics. Any way I bought the AT turntable for $585 on special its normal price being $649. Fast ford two years and the updated replacement the AUDIO TECHNICA AT-LP3XBT regularly priced at $800.00 on sale between $700-750 is just one of many turntables that seem to have taken quite a leap in price. I'm seeing a similar trend in the used market as well. I had considered buying a good used Technics, but they are now pretty much double what they were 18 months ago. So are we seeing a lot larger supply and demand situation or is it just being driven by other commercial factors - increased freight costs for example. Thoughts?
SONDEKNZ Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 (edited) Unfortunately, you are right! Post COVID everything has increased in price - as many companies continue to battle for sheer survival, in the aftermath. These increases in price are right across most new gear - which sets the price benchmark for used gear - and used gear rises in price, accordingly. Sadly, it is pure inflation, as most currencies become worth less and less in the global market, making buying power weaker and weaker. The NEW normal, IMHO... Edited September 28, 2024 by SONDEKNZ 2
muon* Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 It's also due to the relatively recent resurgence in interest in hifi, records ect'. 2

At least red wine is still relatively cheap... 1
