4 Ohm Richter Dragon MK 3 SE speakers sounding muffled

Recommended Posts

Hi Stereo Netters,

I recently picked up some big lovely tall timber Richter Dragon MK3 SE speakers from an estate.  The woofer cones all seem fine and in tact so I bought them but on playback through my 8 ohm A2900 Sansui amp the sound is extremely muffled, there's no brightness as the highs are just not present.  It's the same on both speakers so I'm wondering if it would be a tweeter issue (do people blow tweeters?) or something to do with using an old 8ohm amp for 4 ohm speakers?  From what I've read I might strain the amp but I should still get pretty good sound.

Here's the specs of the speakers and thanks in advance for any advice on this. Cheers, Mark

Type: Vented, quasi 4 way
"Tweeter: 20mm titaniium dome
Midrange: 150mm (6”) Kevlar
Bass: 2 x 150mm (6”) Kevlar
Frequency Response: 29Hz–25Kz

Nom. impedance: 4 Ohms
Dimensions: W 210, D 415, 980

Thanks for the responses.  I'll check the tweeters first and if they aren't sounding I'll then try and take out the cross overs if possible and get someone to check them.

Cheers, Mark

Disconnect one side of the tweeter wiring and meter the resistance if it is dead silent. Should be 7 or 3 or 14ohms. Open or 1ohm is polling or burnt out.
