Beacon
I have a friend who owns a Naim system. He has a Naim nac-92 Pre Amp and nap-90 Power Amp among other items. He is trying to connect a non Naim headphone amp to the pre amp. He has purchased a generic 4 pin to rca interconnect but is unable to get it to work. I had a look at the back of the pre amp and it has a 5 pin output socket and a 4 pin output socket. The 5 pin output socket is connected to the power amp leaving the 4 pin output socket for other uses. In looking at various forums I can see that connecting a headphone amp to the 4 pin output socket can present problems. The pin connections must be carefully matched. I have no idea how to rearrange the pin connections on the plug nor do I think it is possible on the cable he has. So…….. what cable does he need to obtain in order to get this headphone amp working? I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks……

Beacon
Many thanks for that information. What I really need to know is details of the 4 pin output cable needed to connect to a headphone amp. The 4 pin socket can be use for this purpose - so my friend tells me. There is a diagram on the back of the pre amp showing details of each pin connection but I’m afraid it’s not in my range of skills to make up a cable to suit. I believe Naim make specific cables for a variety of purposes but trying to determine which one is the correct cable is a bit of a challenge. So that is what I’m trying to find out here - the specific Naim 4 pin to rca cable for outputting a signal from a Naim pre amp to a headphone amp. Thanks again. I appreciate the help…. Neo
Please look into this as it will provide exactly what the DIN outputs are used for. Neo
Beacon
Oh, Ok…. I’ve just realised that have misunderstood how this works; my excuse being that I am not familiar with the Naim way of making connections! I’ve now spent a few minutes reflecting on how I connect my pre amp to my headphone amp. I DON’T connect it from the pre amp. I connect it directly from my DAC. So, obviously my friend, who, btw, has suffered some brain damage from a horrific cycling accident a few years ago and is the reason why I’m endeavouring to help him sort this out, needs to connect the hp amp to a DAC or CD player. So, next question: how is that connection achieved in a Naim system? I didn’t check out the back of his cd player but assume that it connects to the pre amp via a 4 pin cable. I’ll suggest that he plugs the 4 pin cable from the hp amp into the cd player. Hopefully, it will work. Thanks again for your assistance and apologies for not thinking logically!
