As time goes by, the old halogen 12V downlights die and are now being replaced by modern  LED equivalents.   However it turns out that many of them "sing" in the FM band, and being an olde phart who listens to FM radio, this is a real problem.

Has anyone found a line of 12V LED downlights that _don't_ radiate a pile of RF hash?

Thanks!

I got into making LED lights for aquariums, so I understand this problem.  It comes from the switching power supplies of course.

Now the usual best remedy for noise getting into the hifi is to filter it at the source, so suppression caps to stop the noise travelling back into the house wiring - where it will be radiated everywhere - is probably the best start.

Of course, you could use a big arsed 12V linear power supply.  This is one of the few hifi applications for linear power supplies that actually makes sense 🙂

So, where do you put them and what type and size do you recommend?

I can recommend Phillips Master Series LED globes which have warm light, a lower flicker rate, and emit lower EMF than mass market LED's. High end hotels use them. I'm gradually replacing all the LED globes in my apartment to those LED's. I buy them from GMT lighting in Hawthorn fyi - https://www.gmtlighting.com.au/. Also Soraa LED globes are very good, but pricey. I'm not sure who sells them, so you'd have to jump on their website.

Depends.  An LED is a current driven device, and most will drop a stated voltage (3 or 4 volts or whatever is stated), so if starting out with raw LED's you can daisy chain some up to the given DC voltage you have, and that means you can run a higher voltage than 12 and run some number in series/parallel combinations.  You need a current source to control to the rated current - which can be a simple linear circuit to avoid the noise.

If you buy devices meant to run directly off a 12 volts (ithey will have an inbuilt current circuit) - just replace the switching 12volt power supply with a similarly rated linear one.

These are standard downlights, running off 12VAC.  Most hang off 240/12 stepdown transformers and it's the globe unit itself that's "singing",  if I have an actual "vintage" halogen globe it's dead quiet but swap that for a "modern"  LED unit and suddenly there's a huge amount of RF hash - I assume RF as it badly affects FM reception (but not TVs or other devices).

Yes, turning the light circuit off stops the problem but that's not really an option 🙂

I recommend you to throw all your LEDs in garbage bin or sell if you can, due to bad effects of LEDs (cataract, brain fog, bad EMR, bad for retina, etc.)

And that is not just my opinion, but research of best expert in this field (German guy).

Yes incandescent or halogens are better. But if you're stuck with LED's, the earlier-mentioned options are the 'best of' a bad bunch.

Just like they told us for years about mobile phones.   Now that has been proven wrong, just as this rubbish  will be.

I had the first Erricson flip phone and it gave me headaches after a very short time held to my ear.

So I'm not sure if it was a lie with the early ones.

As far as the LED thing goes? first I have heard of it.

It was never a lie, just stupid rumours.   30+ years later, the data is still showing there is no physical effect caused by the phones (except maybe psychological)

Strange as I had never heard of ill effects at the time but got headaches from that phone, and only that phone.

Edit: anyway, that is history, now back to LEDs.

Just read INSTRUCTIONS (small print) on every phone and you will be crying...

Good luck,

nearly everything including TV, tablets,  computer screens are all LED or some form of LEDs.  This assumption of effecting eyes is just FUD and nothing else as it’s unproven.  If you are really worried get a blue filter. Lots of glasses comes with it and if you have had your lens replaced in you eyes you will noticed that the replacement lenses have UV and blue light filters.    If you are talking about sunlight then that will have more weight as the suns UV does causes cataract, unproven in LED exposure.

i been exposed to analog and digital phone technology for over 30yrs,   When they 1st came out I was literally on it 4-6hrs a day,  Nothing wrong with me,  just ended on SNA up here since the 2010.

Every day say preyer that you still have health. Me, can feel phone EMF after few minutes, especially when it is raining.

I can feel the EMF from my phone as soon as it's close to me, so I keep it locked in my drawer most of the time & only check for messages two or three times a day. And always make calls on speaker phone.

Do a double blind test,  do it 10 times,  get someone to switch your phone off and on without you knowing place it near you and guess whether its turned on or not.  Good test to see it the placebo effect is working.

Here’s a typical Philips LED .  Note it has a C tick and a code and a CE.  You guys should look that up to tell you what it means.   If you have a product that’s exhibiting RF interference it’s regarded as faulty and doesn’t confirmed to the c-tick or CE standards

I was wondering when someone would pull out the DBT card, goading me to 'prove' my claim. I don't need to. Feeling is my first gift line.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Just get yourself some of the "anti EMF radiation" products that are plentiful online. Surely if you believe all the hype about harmful rays from your LEDs, phones and flatscreens, then you'd also believe in the effects of these magical devices too...

I remember about 20 years ago they used to sell them at the shows, like caravan and camping shows, the yearly show at Maitland etc. And the woman selling them gave a very scientific explanation of how they "changed the hertz frequency" (her exact words) of the device you stuck them to.. ie phone, computer screen and anything else electrical...

I only stayed to watch for a while, because I was in a hurry to get a "Brock Energy Polarizer" for my car....
