Have bands really “dropped the ball”?

Recommended Posts

It seems to be the new fashion which is really an old fashion. Old people not liking new peoples music.

FWIW  I haven't listened to the "radio" for music since about 1976. Pop music is for people who like pop music. There are thousands of bands out there. Just stop looking to the FM  stations for guidance..

Of course for the  bands it is very difficult to make a living from music but Id suggest whenever whatever time you'd like to reference the bands that made money from music were a very small sample of the great bands that were out there,

@crisis about time you listened to the radio again then! For a start listen  to the right FM/ digital stations. There aren’t many but they are there. For me in Sydney 2SER is a great source of new and old music. Ignore the occasional banal youthful commentary and tune in to some of their regular segments like The Tiki Lounge or Stuart Coupe’s ( a venerable Sydney musicologist) Dirt Music. It’s on and off the beaten track, interesting and beautifully curated at times. It’s where I hear most new music that appeals.

Maybe but I’ve moved on from FM. Not the best for hifi replay (and I only have access to FM in my car) however I take your point for new music. I may be a bit stubborn but I’d rather look for my own music and Spotify and YouTube seem to suffice when pointing me in the right direction. That said there is also a place for new suggestions.

Did anyone read the article? 🤣

He's talking about there not being many new traditional bands (with several contributing, identifiable members). This being due to current music industry economics. It's more viable to be a solo artist or work under a band-like name and subcontract/hire some studio musicians or a touring band when necessary.

Quickly flicking through my purchases of new (last decade or so) acts, I would only rate one as a traditional "band" and that was "Black Country New Road". Plenty of single person under a band-like name though, Young Jesus, Japanese Breakfast, Weyes Blood, Japanese House, Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, Tame Impala etc..........

Enough of it. Still, in my purchases of "new" (last decade or so), acts include Skyharbor, Amaranthe, Oceans of Slumber, alt., Sleep Token, all of which are bands. It really comes down to what you like and how much effort you are going to put in. Oddly not much in my case as they were mostly "suggestions" on Spotify and YouTube from music I had been listening to.

There's PLENTY of good bands out there, they just don't get the reach that previous decades did and don't find their way onto music charts unless it's been a TikTok hit.

There's some fantastic young Aussie bands doing the rounds. I'm nearly 50 and don't listen to the radio for more than 10 minutes a week, but still find new artists to listen too. I quite often will browse through music review websites and then have a listen to artists that sound interesting in the reviews  on Spotify, and if I really like it, I'll get the vinyl. Also find music through Spotify suggestions, social media and music forums
