Used AVR recommendation (<$400~)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm new to all this but trying to build a home theatre on the cheap. I don't mind having older used equipment, particularly if it was good in its day.

Currently I have a JCV DLA X-3 projector, which is great. I had some Richter Paladin speakers sitting in storage, so I've picked up an older Richter unicorn centre speaker and a Richter Son of Thor sub woofer (yet to arrive) via Marketplace / Gumtree. I also have some KEF RDM Two Type SP3254 monitors that I had from a previous setup that I could maybe use as rears, space permitting.

The plan is to run an Apple TV 4K into the AVR, with HDMI passthrough to the projector.

I picked up a used Yamaha HTR-3063 primarily because it looked like it would do the HDMI passthrough. However, it doesn't want to play ball and shuts off when I try. It's fine if I send the audio to the AVR via the analogue connections, although for some reason it no longer recognises the centre speaker. I'm not sure why it does this, whether it's a fault somewhere in the AVR (HDMI issue?) or some other reason.

Anyway, I'm thinking it might be best to look for a different AVR. I don't want new or expensive but I can stretch the budget if there's a compelling reason to. Currently, the budget is somewhere between $100-$400. I understand I might need a newer model (post 2015?) to make sure the HDMI component is good enough.

Thanks.

Try setting the Apple TV to a lower resolution so that the Yamaha can handle the HDMI handshake.

Thanks Snoopy. But that's not it. Last time I was actually using my laptop as a source signal and that shut the receiver down. This time I used the Apple TV and the  Yamaha at least didn't shut down this time and would very intermittently show a picture but essentially doesn't work on any of the HDMI inputs.

So I think I'm still looking at finding a reasonable receiver... any suggestions?
