Pioneer direct drive turntables

Recommended Posts

Mine probably doesn't really qualify, but it is a Pioneer Direct Drive and it does sound very good.

It's just a humble PL-200 which is reliable and still performs nicely.

It resides in a genuine stylish Pioneer Hifi rack along with the A-447 Integrated and a number of other vintage Pioneer niceties.

It was purchased because the mod required to provide 78RPM playback is simple and allows me to only have one TT in the mancave for playing the 78s while still doing a decent job with LPs.  A slider switch is mounted discreetly just under the front to convert the 45RPM selection to 78.

A Shure M44 cart +N44-3 stylus is used for the 78s.  For LPs, I have an elliptical stylus for the M44, but the standard headshell mount means that changing over to one of my other carts is also nice & easy.

I have used a few over the years.

This classic has stayed  - Pioneer Exclusive P3.

This was Japan's version of Lexus luxury division decades before.

Do you know anyone who can work on these?

I had it serviced by Pioneer in Japan when I first bought it in 2009.  Touch wood, it's never missed a beat in almost 15 years.

The motor unit is sealed so you never have to change / top up oil. It is literally made to last a lifetime.

That said, Chris Kimmel has worked on my SP10MK3 and the Pioneer P10 when I owned it. Chris even made his own IC circuit for the speed control as the original IT'S were no longer available.   Very good technician considering he doesn't specialise in turntables.

I neglected to post about mine, a Pioneer pl70ii, a scaled down version of the exclusive line with a similar tonearm. I bought mine on eBay from Japan. I have wanted one of these for years. It arrived a few weeks ago.

Unfortunately it has had 2 problems. Speed issue fixed by local Japanese fellow. Next is the collet chuck on tonearm is not moving so I can’t adjust auto lift. The seller has been malingering about it and the Japanese guy is not wild about working on it. S
