pdougnort
Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and am starting to rebuild a pair of Gale 401A's (Chrome End caps) that I have had since 1976, when I was introduced to Gale Loudspeakers. They have been inoperable for about 10-15 years as the foam surround has been destroyed due to environmental issues. I purchased rebuild kits from Greg Barnes @ Speakers-Repairs.co.uk but it doesn't look like he is still in business anymore. Hoping nothing has happened. Life got in the way and I haven't been able to start the rebuilding process but now I am retired and have more time. Anyway, I have begin to clean up my 8" woofers and with one of them, the voice coil is sucked down in lower than the metal rim of the speaker. In the attached photo, you can see the speaker on the left is the speaker with the voice coil in a lower position than normal. Should I be concerned about this or should I just lift up the cone when I am gluing in the new foam surround and pull it up and in place. I am new to this and could use some advice from the "experts" that have done this before. Thanks in advance for any constructive advice! THOMO
It could be that there is a problem with the spider or spider attachment. Some Gales do need new spiders . It is not common but you do encounter it. The Gale restoration expert in Australia is Jason Boyd in Perth [The Speaker Doctor].He has a connection going back to Arena Distributors who were the Australian agents and who sold lots of them here. service@speaker-doctor.com Edited August 12 by THOMO
