What online sites are people mainly buying their CDs from?

I’ve been looking through Amazon but for some reason many of the ones I am interested in cannot be shipped to Australia…..so who or where are good alternatives?

i agree with all of the above.

Just a couple of tips @captain starlight which i'm sure are relatable for most:

If buying second hand, ask yourself would you be OK with the price if the grading turns out to be a level less than advertised (honest mistakes, or judgement errors, do happen).

If the on-line seller has no physical (shop) address, no phone number, no email address, and only a vanilla "Contact Form" then i tend to avoid.  Or make a very small order to test the water.

There are many excellent real stores (like Redeye already mentioned) that also have a catalogue on their website and/or links to their Discogs page.

For new audiophile quality cd's;

In Australia -

- Audiophilereferencerecordings.com.au

O/S -

- Elusive Disc
- CD Japan

- Acoustic Sounds
- https://cdsvinyljapan.com/en-au
- Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs
- Importcds.com
- Chesky Records

For used cd's -

- Discogs

- Ebay (if unable to find what I want on Discogs)

- Second hand record stores (eg: Dixon Recycled Records in Melbourne)

I've recently used an ebay seller called importcds-au which are based in the USA to purchase a few contemporary classical CDs - they're a fairly high volume seller and have a reasonably extensive range of stuff. They offer free tracked international delivery and a 25% discount on two or more items purchased so I've ended up paying around thirty dollars per CD.

For classical and jazz recordings, Presto Music in the UK is worth a look.

Good pricing, transport and service.

I've found the occasional unexpected title at JB Hi-Fi.

Racks of cd's used to take up roughly half the floor space in JB Hifi stores at their peak. Now it's just a small section. So I prefer to check out indie and second hand record stores.

I was referring to their online selection, as the initially posted question was about online sites.

While I think of it, a couple of others that I've used are Rarewaves (via ebay.com.au) and wowhd.com.au

Ah my bad. I'll have to check out JB's online cd catalogue, as I would have assumed that their online catalogue is the same as what's available in-store.

@Craigandkim, yeah you're right. Used to be that wowhd.com.au would redirect you to their UK site, but retain the pricing in Australian dollars. Think it still does, but I haven't checked recently.

@David A, I have the impression that their online catalogue contains titles that are available from both their warehouse and their stores, and you get things from wherever there's stock. As I said, that's just my impression, and I could easily be wrong.

So have I, but usually only when they put titles in their discount racks, which is not so often these days.

Just received notification from Presto (via email)

They have some 20% off specials on Sony and RCA Red Seal labels, many of which were deleted from the lists for a while.

I picked up a bunch of good, cheap CDs just recently from Fishpond - https://www.fishpond.com.au/Music

Also some good stuff on https://rockaway.com.au/

By wary of fishpond, they have a habit of implying that items are in stock from local suppliers at pos only to later inform that stock has changed and now the item is shipping from overseas. I've just had them do this to me when I ordered a tool cd and they've done it to me before with book orders too

Utopia records are also worth a look if you are interested in rock music:

Yep, and there's an eBay seller from NZ, listing items 'from NZ' but using Fishpond and its overseas supplier. I recently ordered a CD from this seller- it arrived more than a month later. Not sure how they can get away with it!

That could mean they're shipping pirated cd's. I bought several blurays from Amazon. The blurays I received had flimsy cases compared to normal dvd's i've bought from JB etc, the writing/artwork on the discs looked minimalistic and non-original, and I had issues with a couple of dvd's freezing and skipping chapters. The first time that happened I filed a complaint and got replacements which resolved the technical issues, but they still looked suspiciously like cheap knock-offs. I will never buy anything from Amazon again unless I have no other choice.
