Softailricho Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 So I was on the phone today while I was putting my stylus back into its lock and it slipped out and skipped across the record. There’s 50 hours on this max. At95e. I’ve heard of people having this issue without dropping their stylus. Last time I checked it when I cleaned it. A couple of hours ago I’m pretty sure it was still straight. wouldntou consider this still safe to use? Or is it a bin job. Also would this be 100% a direct result of it bouncing across the record when I dropped it. Or an antiskate/alignment issue.
Jakeyb77_Redux Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 I would bin it. It’s a cheap cart (not a disparaging remark, it performs very respectably), but the cantilever is bent now. Get a new stylus for it or upgrade 2

Get a new stylus for it or upgrade look I agree for the sake of the $80 or whatever it costs I would rather not risk my grails. just really disappointed it ended like this. If it’s not an issue with my setup I’m thinking vm95ml as an upgrade. Not sure if I’ve got the cash to burn at the moment. Edited August 1, 2024 by Softailricho
georgehifi Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 (edited) @Softailricho Nothing wrong with an AT95E, it's good workhorse, people still love it https://tinyurl.com/2bkj6l7g . If your good (steady) enough with your hands and have access to some very fine "watchmakers tweezers" and strong table mount magnifying glass, that cantilever can be straightened. (you've got nothing to loose and you wouldn't/couldn't sell it like this) Cheers George Edited August 1, 2024 by georgehifi 3

If it’s not an issue with my setup I’m thinking vm95nm as an upgrade. Not sure if I’ve got the cash to burn at the moment. It’s the plot of every TT enthusiast to have it happen at least once. Trust me, it hurts a lot more when your cart is in the $$$$ 1 1
audiofeline Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 At least it's not a good quality MC cart, like happened to me decades ago! I would suggest replacing it. And I would keep it, and try to straighten it yourself. If you have some success, mark the fixed stylus (eg. an X with a felt pen), and have it as a spare stylus to play scratched/dirty records (eg. from an opshop), so you don't risk damage to your new replacement. 1
cafe latte Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 My 2c is yes try to fix it, but don't squeeze with tweezers as the aluminium is very thin. It is an elliptical so it is not super critical to get it perfectly back as the contact patch's are not critical on elliptical. If you upgrade and you get an ml, not only will it sound better, but it will last more than 3x as long so it is really not expensive at all if you consider this. A 95e elliptical stylus is done in less than 300 hours but thr ml is good for over 1000. Chris 4

(Position the tweezer tips at the 2 points marked in red and turn anti clockwise to force the bend out.) I can see this as an easy fix "if" your not ham fisted. BTW where in Sydney are you? Cheers George What I do with a bend like this is secure the cart to the bench, I have a tiny cart holder but blu tac may work. Use one pair of tweezers to hold the black bit and use the others long ways down the sides of the cantilever and ease across a little at a time. Thiiis way you wont dent anything. Chris 2

Cheers George Hey mate I’m located in Campbelltown. Unfortunately I didn’t see this guide first. But yes I’m quite heavy handed and I failed miserable at bending it back I had it in a watchmakers clamp but I shoulda used a magnifying glass. Anyways. Like lesson learned. I bought a replacement stylus today. And I’ll just push the upgrade later down the track. Time to get some hours on this one 2
LogicprObe Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 Bah! Try and bend it back.........if it doesn't work............buy another one! BTW..........do you also talk on the phone whilst driving? 1

I didn’t have that when handling my stylus however. 18 hours ago, georgehifi said: Nothing tried nothing lost, at least you gave it a go. Better luck next time.
