AUDIOMAN2
I'm in the process of trying to buy a decent subwoofer. I thought that this would be a relatively simple process; sort out my budget and look for a reputable manufacturer like Klipsch, REL, Mirage and maybe even JBL. The budget part was easy. I'm buy used so the budget tops out at around $600.00. I have found numerous options that appear to suit my needs but prior to buying I started investigating the best method of connection and that's where things started to get muddy. I have low level stereo preamp outputs and high level speaker outputs. Some subs have low level L&R inputs and also high level L&R inputs. People like Paul McGowan (of PS Audio) and the good people at REL, swear by using high level signals to drive subs but they never seem to explain what is happening to the L&R signals in the sub. I guess the same applies to the low level signals when they get to the sub. Is there some sort of mixing circuit or is it just a few resistors that are attempting to combine the signals. I have a friend who has a very nice sub with a single low level input and when he combines the preamp outputs with a "Y" connector he insists that the imaging in his system starts to fall apart. So, what's happening behind the input connectors of a sub, be it the high or low level inputs?
