FR DRew Posted June 30, 2024 Posted June 30, 2024 (edited) I wish Paul would just answer the stuff that he actually knows. Being an "expert" and talking bullshit does nothing for your reputation. Lateral movement produces a mono signal. Cut this way, original mono records were largely immune to scratches and record warps as the damage primarily occurred in the up/down plane, not the side to side plane. To allow a stereo and mono signal, the two channels were placed 90 degrees offset to each other cutting at a 45 degree angle and with one channel phase reversed. This meant that mono signals would still result in lateral movement, but any signal that was solely for a single channel would be occurring at 90 degrees to the signal of the other and therefore not bleed across to it at all. There's a lot of really simple diagrams and animations out there that very clearly show how all this works. Paul should know better. Edited June 30, 2024 by FR DRew
ReliaBill EngR Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 L-R most definitely IS cut laterally and vertically in a stereo record. Paul oversimplified the resolving process and geometry, but he did get the lateral/vertical part correct.
Grizzly Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Drat, I thought this thread was about Captain Sensible
