Speaker and receiver recommendations for small home theatre room

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm hoping someone might have suggestions for suitable speakers and a receiver for a room measuring 3.7m x 3.1m. The room will only be used for watching movies. Probably sticking with a 3.1 system for now.

Speakers: maybe KEF LS-50 Metas (LCR), but it doesn't seem to be possible to buy a single speaker like it is in the US. These are on special at the moment for $2k.

Sub: I know nothing about subs, but the matching KEF sub seems quite expensive - probably a good match for a music system though.

Receiver: maybe a used Denon? budget around $1500

Source: OLED TV connected to NAS (streaming ripped 4K movies).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just note that the KEFs (if you go that way) will benefit from beefy amplification to sound their best. And yes the subs are very expensive.

There might even be an OZ manufacturer package incl. centre speaker that would suit better (Vaf or Krix or the like)?

Thanks for the advice. I thought about maybe three class d amps (hypex,  purifi, or maybe Fosi Audio V3 monos) down the track.  I'll check out your suggestions.

Have been using a very similar setup in my living room since 2022.

3x KEF LS50 Meta with two SVS subs. Denon AVR X3600H as a pre (and to manage the two subs) and an Anthem MCA 325 3-Channel Power Amplifier for the KEF. Am sitting about 2.5m from the speakers and they work incredibly well in this setup.

Can confirm that the LS50 like power - adding the Anthem into the mix made a notable difference in my opinion.

2x SVS SB2000 - started with a couple of PB1000s but couldn't quite get them integrated in a satisfying way. Much better success with the sealed boxes in my room.

Thanks, I'll research that model.

Maybe the Tonewinner AT-300 AV Processor in the classifieds plus 3 x class D amps would be an option?

Probably not a good option because the Tonewinner requires knowledge to use and 3 amps will take up space.

There are a few AVRs in the Classifieds which are likely better suited. And get an AVR with the most power.

As for speakers, get matching speakers for the front. Unfortunately, 3 front speakers seldom appear together in the Classifieds.  The alternative is to get a pair and a matching centre; ideally same brand but if not, tonally matched (i.e. sound the same).

Can anyone recommend other subs that would be suitable for this small-ish room (3.7x3.1 x 2.7 height)?

If size is the issue

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ve  managed to source 3x KEF LS50 Meta for the fronts and a Denon 3700. Also have on order 3 x Fosi v3 monos. Hopefully I’m in the right track!
