JukKluk2 Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 (edited) Sometimes a Best Of album transcends the regular output of the artist in question and stands taller than anything that they have released throughout their career. Do you have such a Best Of in your collection? If so, what is it? Mine is this one from Thomas Blug. Great music, great playing, a wonderful experience. Over to you.... keyse1 Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Lot of country music best served by greatest hits type collections Ive got a box of every Johnny Cash record he made at Columbia Records about 50 of them A lot of them are so bad as to be unlistenable A lot are very ordinary with a couple of great songs on each A themed 3 cd set Love God Murder captures a lot of great songs Hank Williams only made 2 records in his short life plus a lot of singles from what I understand 40 Greatest Hits is I think one of the best ever country music records ever made From memory Patsy Cline only made 3 records plus singles and a collection of her songs make a great record
keyse1 Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 The Beatles before Rubber Soul make for great greatest hits collections Likewise The Stones before Beggars Banquet After that albums only On the other hand Bob Dylan and Neil Young can’t be reduced to greatest hit style compilations because their songs are so intrinsic to the albums they made 1
surprisetech Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Joy Division only released 2 studio albums. Transmission, Love Will Tear Us Apart and Atmosphere were not on either of them. For me, that made either the 'Substance' or 'Permanent' best-of compilation a must have. Coincidentally, Peter Hook & The Light at the Forum a couple of weeks ago was an absolute cracker of a show. And another coincidence is that my other favourite best of would have to be 'Sum and Substance' from The Mission. 1
Phill451 Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Excellent topic. I am sure there are many and I probably have many on CD and vinyl that I could mention but the two that come to mind right now are: What is beat? and Songs to learn and sing I suspect these both date me somewhat, but I have both on vinyl and still play them.
