David VS Goliath - Round 2 - MK Sound / Tonewinner 1-2 Combo

Recommended Posts

Hey all, i've always been fascinated with the idea of a david vs goliath system, where I combine either say big amps with small speakers or big subwoofers with small but equally as effective speakers. My original "David vs Goliath" which can be viewed here combined MK Sound M7 speakers, MK Sound M5 speakers and some SVS PC2000 Pro subwoofers. It was a great system and loved it. Shortly after I changed to MK Sound S150 MK2 speakers and Dual V15+ subwoofers (plus rotel amps) which was an amazing setup but a few curveballs in life mean't i would need to either sell up or downgrade. I made the most of what I could and combined some of my ideas to build a more budget friendly David VS Goliath Round 2. Here is that system 🙂

Hey all, just had a little update on the system. I've wanted a standalone vesa stand/cart to be able to put my tv on. I love mounting to the wall using vesa bracket but this way I will be able to change tv screens and have a bit more adjustability if I decide to move the room around

its a TV Stand cart I got off ebay. It supports upto 80kg I believe. My dream of one day having a 98" TV will be great and should fit on this stand too hopefully haha

I am also working on a 3d printed bracket for this part of my couch. Since the Dayton Audio BST-300EX Tactile transducers will be mounted to this section of the couch, I wanted to 3d print a plate to cover this section and have binding posts. The BST300-EX are 4ohm each, so I will have 2 sets of binding posts at the back and run them to my Dayton Audio APA1200DSP subwoofer amp (its 2 channel, one for each).

Here is a small draft of the plate I am working on. It still needs screw holes to attach to the couch and maybe a few other connections for future proofing. I would love to make it out of 2 pieces (and will be black). I love creating stuff like this. Just adds a bit of your own touch to the items.

Hey all,

I've been super excited to share this. I have just got 2 Dayton BST-300EX and i've figured out that a Startech Server mount Vesa monitor Bracket fits perfectly inbetween most 2 seater couches with a centre console.

I put Furniture nuts from the back of the wood of the centre console frame so i can take it off and on as much as needed without having to worry about threads in the wood. I 3d printed a little plate for the binding posts too (one for each). My amp only has 2x 8 ohm or 1x bridged 4 ohm (Dayton APA1200 DSP sub amp) so I have had to run seperate channels, but if i get another 2 at some stage I will likely run them in a total of 4 ohms (2x in 8 ohms and 2x in 8 ohms for combined 4 ohm load).

Here is my attempted Double decker bus. That is 2 of the star tech server vesa monitor brackets clamped together. This will allow me to add another set of BST300 EX under the bracket and still mount it within the 1 piece.

I 3d printed a little bracket since only 2 of the vesa mounts match the BST300EX (strangely it matches perfectly for the Buttkicker LFE).

While i was there I also mounted a bluetooth accelerometer so it will be easy to tune the buttkickers. And since its hard mounted it will have a lot more accurate vibrations. I still need to do EQ'ing but my APA1200DSP doesn't have much adjustments (and none below 20hz) so I might have to get a dayton audio LF DLP to assist.

Gald to see Round 2 is coming together very well!  Nicely done @MKSOUND_HT  I cant wait to get a 100inch tv to replace my current screen in the coming years!

Thank you so much buddy. Really appreciate it.  I've been contemplating adding an extra 4 channels (front wides and side surrounds) haha.

Actually, been meaning to ask..  How did you find the PC2000's sound? as compared to the M&Ks?

That is a great question indeed. I must admit there was a bit of time between the PC2000 pro's and when I got the M&K's, but I reckon the M&K's maybe sounded a bit cleaner, this was likely due to the sealed enclosures. I think the V15+ still went down to 18hz or so but they are relying more on in room gain I think. I think the SVS definitely dug deeper at 17-23hz. I always wanted to try out a SVS PC4000 one day (or two haha). I've been a huge fan of the Sono tube subwoofers from the early days of DIY i guess hahaha.

Awesome work, I use MK sound speakers too and I have no doubt that the M7s would punch well above their weight, particularly given the two massive subs you are running!

Oh thank u heaps. Its so nice to hear that you are also a big MK Sound fan. I was wondering which gen S150's you currently own? I had the Gen 2 model S150 silver logo at the bottom) and foam between the tweeters. I reckon the heritage and the amazing memories of seeing this equipment when I was too young to afford it (I think at all ages to afford it haha) that you are one day owning the equipment you dreamt of feels amazing.
