playdough Posted June 19, 2024 Author Posted June 19, 2024 Just thinking about the small 1150 Hz horns, why not build a 3 way, using a line array of 2 x 8 or 10" woofers in small boxes, or basically a mini me version of the current undertaking roughly a quarter of the size,,,,,,,,,,,,for a brand new home currently coming out of the ground.
crtexcnndrm99 Posted June 19, 2024 Posted June 19, 2024 I’m thinking about multiple 10-12” woofers with my current horns from Martin, so do continue that line of thinking and building… 1

Cheers Ah, yes the "more attractive speaker line" spoken of at times. At the end of this build + the mini me set, I just may have to concede, that bigger is not necessarily better or more attractive to the fairer gender and if it's her house,,,,,,well what she says,,,,goes. What we do agree on however, there must be music and a beautiful system to play it on and it cannot be "just a pretty box" it has to be Art and beautiful standing alone. playdough Posted June 19, 2024 Author Posted June 19, 2024 (edited) Just out of interest, off topic a little but we have created something together on this occasion. Me doing the woodwork and other hardware, to frame this nice little polymer clay piece, by her, which she finished in the last evening, baking and burnishing/polishing. The frame was made from a scrap of blackwood coffee table top. We plan to do a set of 3, over time. A lot of work in just that, but rewarding to see on the wall I'll wager, later this morning and a little surprise for the home coming worker,,,now to find the white gloves, boot leg whiskey (my best glass cleaner) and a microfibre to do this assembly. playdough Posted June 20, 2024 Author Posted June 20, 2024 May be upside down ? not set to the mm in the frame,,,Dunno, but it's nice and suits the room of grey, off white, black, green leather lounge and blackwood features/kitchen. Back to speaker building after I install 20m of fence post holes my favourite job. 3

playdough Posted June 24, 2024 Author Posted June 24, 2024 So the Horns are being loaded into a carton and heading my way very soon. Project tracking well with all the hardware and can start wiring drivers to Speakon 4P sockets, ready to plug in. 4

Yes, Martin really is an excellent Man to deal with. It's likely another pair of horns will be built in the future (the 350Hz) although this lot of 4 horns represents 2 pairs of speakers to build. Francesca and the Mini Me, each pair of mains with pairs remote subs. I shouldn't be waiting too long for the Horns and should be able to cobble something together for testing in a day, hopefully to get some gauge on how the coax/horn interact, set up initial crossovers and raw measurements. Currently waiting for a Gas Fitter to plumb an outlet for my stove, this morning and a fence that went down during the storms is going back up with posts concreted in yesterday. Kitchen renovation is holding up this project now, one job at a time.

Interesting looking speaker, still wondering where "on axis" would be 1 1
playdough Posted July 2, 2024 Author Posted July 2, 2024 (edited) Well, there was an install go into the 40 food Bedford for the Mrs,, had an amp fail to work when plugged in so it isn't finished,,,,,I'll get better photos as this one is buttoned up, with a fresh amp and a spare . THere is a single sealed 12" sub next to the driver seat. Edited July 2, 2024 by playdough
playdough Posted July 4, 2024 Author Posted July 4, 2024 Azura Horn delivery, Martin. is truly a great Craftsman from concept to delivery. I haven't detected anomaly or fault of any type of fitting or finish, just perfect. Even the packing carton was perfect Thanks Mate Time to be busy, setting up and start testing. 3
playdough Posted July 17, 2024 Author Posted July 17, 2024 (edited) Another photo of the Bedford bus, albeit waiting on the BT power amp. Also is a job I was involved in acoustic treatment of some of the local uni. Well and truly living away from home at my other home ( the bus ) for a little time so the speaker job is on hold. Looks like I’ll be building a house here before Christmas. Mmmmm. Busy Edited July 17, 2024 by playdough
playdough Posted July 17, 2024 Author Posted July 17, 2024 The 10mm thick acrylic panels resulted in a similar problem @almikel pointed out in another thread, sucking the life out of the HF range . A better situation than no treatment for conference but certainly didn’t have a use for any in a measured and weighed HiFi sound lounge, clap response is better but not great.

Carpet tiles or Felt panels would do the trick...and get a bloody move on, the Azura's are getting lonely. 1

Yea, next job is setting up for measurements, not a huge thing but keen to try. Just need to be home to do that and hopefully the weekend or later next week. cheers playdough
playdough Posted July 29, 2024 Author Posted July 29, 2024 Still working on the speaker set however it's gone a little sideways back into work on the lounge room, mainly due to the fact the area is not quite a completed thing and been ongoing for more than a year. Installed some long overdue overhead cabinets and building in a CD/DV storage unit, having no storage means the things are randomly everywhere. It was a bit of a shame to paint blackwood,,,,,,,but there is plenty of wood in the area a rare thing to see installed these days as something brand new. Sort of planning to do some testing next week, have found the Umik1, an amp, a processor and PC, but building it from scratch, remotely from here at the Bedford bus block of land where I'm helping build a house starting next month. 2

I've had to let some things go for a little while and the stereo/lounge is one of those things. Not that happy about it actually,,,,,but that's another story. I had an hour here today, but will drive on for another 4 hours to my other home, which can't really cater for my large horn sets or testing the things. In time I'll continue the work and show some results here, not too long, hopefully before Christmas and definately in the new year, just wrapped up in another project. I think about it daily.
playdough Posted October 13, 2024 Author Posted October 13, 2024 One way to relieve a situation where you want to test a horn, is build a hut, so literally from the ground up this time. Ground here is On a 45degree angle so perfect for pointing a speaker into open air and suspending a microphone, photo telling a thousand words from my little flat area in the bush. Hey welcome to my new speaker building lab has to start somewhere. I keep thinking about a swivel stand for the horns with a protractor for measurement in degree increments .obviously an off grid power supply will be the go to for this project. 4

More stud walls up. Building is small so won't take long to finish and on it full time after an away mission of 10 days. Just made it to the other end of the state to pick up the 240 horn, both the coaxial drivers, cables, test rig and other supplies. Would also like to have power and water A small, precision 1Kw, 230vac Power supply will start with an earth stake. I've hoarded a nice second hand battery, inverter and solar controller over time for just the (an) occasion, DC water pump included Back to work. 1
