jamesg11 Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 Seeking recommendations re new TV, say 75” but flexible with size. Out of the loop - last serious purchase was a 2k Loewe 55” a decade plus back. Been using a 4k Sony 49” last 5 yrs. Happy to look at options medium thru top dollar. Please give us your current ‘bang for buck’ views!
Guest Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 Suggest getting the biggest best TV you can afford and don't worry if you think it is too big! The common regret of people is they should have bought the larger TV. Best are the OLED TVs from Samsung, Sony and LG, but they perform best in less bright rooms. Suggest using this as a starting point https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/by-size/70-75-77-inch You will need to translate the USA models to AU and then have a look at the local reviews, post questions here. Bang for buck TVs are the Chinese brands..
jamesg11 Posted February 4, 2024 Author Posted February 4, 2024 Appreciated! Wall is ~6m x 2.7-4.5m, no windows.
jamesg11 Posted February 4, 2024 Author Posted February 4, 2024 This is around atm - Samsung 77-inch S90C OLED 4K Smart TV. Assuming it’s the same model as per the rtings.com site?

Tony M Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 I picked up a Sony A95L 77" a couple of months ago when JB Hifi were having a 20% off all TV's sale. As it was a new model and "flavour of the month" as well as in short supply, this was an amazing discount. They also give a "voluntary" 5 year warranty on TV's in that price range. Rtings give this TV 9.2 for general usage, which I believe is their highest score to date. Anyway, I was coming from an excellent 6yo Panasonic 65" and I do notice the real improvement in PQ as well as the increased size. Definitely not a TV connoisseur but I really can't fault the PQ. Sony have a reputation for very good upscaling and I have no reason to doubt this is valid. The thing appears well built and the remote is one of the best I've used. We usually use a Harmony Elite, but occasionally revert to the Sony remote for more complex fiddling with settings etc. There's a lot about this TV on the net. I read everything I could find before I installed it and can confirm most of the hype is valid. Haven't bothered to keep up with the latest info though - TV is more of an appliance than a hobby here. Four things I was disappointed with are: IMHO, the sound is adequate, but some of the reviews suggested it is exceptional for on-board TV sound. Perhaps there are a lot of awful sounding TV's out there and it really is better than most. We usually don't bother to turn on the stereo as it's "good enough" for general viewing, but it's not as good as the reviews led me to expect. After plugging in all the cables (including 4 HDMI cables) there's no way the back cover that goes over the cables will fit. So I just left it off. This annoyed me at the time, but I haven't thought about it since. The vesa mounting holes are only 300mm apart vertically and horizontally, which seems silly for a 77" TV. Worse still, they are very low on the set. So, instead of just removing the Panasonic from the articulated mount and hanging the Sony, i had to lower the whole mount by about 200 mm, involving a lot of Gyprock patching and painting - total PITA and totally unexpected. It has a detachable webcam and I haven't figured out how to view the webcam picture on the screen - certainly not intuitive if it can even be done. No real purpose to that - just curious to see what the picture was like, I might detach the camera as I find most of it's uses (gesture control, sound and picture adjustment according to who's where in the room etc) a bit lame and we don't use zoom etc. Still, we reckon it's an excellent TV overall and recommend it with some reservations. 2
Jeddie Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 (edited) Get 85" minimum. I sit 3.5m from my 85" and its great. Edited February 4, 2024 by Jeddie
jamesg11 Posted February 12, 2024 Author Posted February 12, 2024 Decided those OLEDs needing v darkened room are a risk, given room & watch times. Looked for the suggested Sony X95L (better suited to some a non-dark room, apparently) - neither 75” or 85” available atm, at least with major retailers & Sony au. Suppose I can sit & wait …

Suppose I can sit & wait … The QD Oled from Samsung and Sony, up to 75" (larger is WOLED), will do well in a bright room, assuming you have the budget. Micro LED can also be used in bright rooms. They were supposed to take over the world, at a lower cost, but have not lived up to the hype. Have you tried asking the retailers about the Sony?
jamesg11 Posted February 12, 2024 Author Posted February 12, 2024 No, not yet … just on-line checking. Anyone here actually using a Sony X95L? Search didn’t reveal much.

I suspect the X95L is USA only, and Australia has only X95K ??? Like you, my viewing is in a bright family room. I ended up with an "interim" mid range Samsung 75" QLED a few years ago, good enough until larger than 75" QD OLED or Micro LED come down in price. But I could be waiting a long time... Comes down to what you are prepared to pay and what compromises you can accept.
April Snow Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 I have a bright room too - so went with a Samsung QLED 75 inch as well - find it is a perfect size for my viewing distance. Did take me about a month to get used to it though after upgrading from a 65 inch - but glad I did. It is wall mounted. I like Samsung TVs and the apps are easy to use - came loaded with all you need. 2
BuffySlayer Posted February 28, 2024 Posted February 28, 2024 Sony A95L no longer available in 77". Went to purchase a few weeks ago, Sony price matched, then emailed to say next shipment due 12th Feb. Now says discontinued on their website.
jamesg11 Posted February 28, 2024 Author Posted February 28, 2024 The Sony 75” X95L is what we’ve gone with - got outvoted on the 85”. Installed tomorrow. Seem to be only available thru the specialist type AV-HiFi retailers. Got ours from Audio Trends in Melb.
