Goodman Magnum SL Does anyone know if they are any good?

Recommended Posts

Just picked up these Goodmans in Brisbane for 70 bucks. Overall condition is good, looks like there's a crack in the front face just below the bass driver, but doesn't go all the way through. One bass driver has slight coil rub (could be the coil former flanged from bottoming out) and the other mid range surround has come loose.

The Ad said one speaker had stopped working and when I got them home I ran the meter across the speaker terminals and one unit was open circuit. Found the crossover snapped off the back of the terminal housing. (That would've taken some force to do that).

I'm chasing to see if anyone knows the sensitivity of them.

Cheers.

Hi Peter ......    now that's a really good score...........    Have not heard the Magnum SL speakers but read some good things ...........    I am working on some Magnum K speakers at the moment which is a lot of fun ( but I'm always REALLY slow  ......    I've bought new stuff for the Xovers but yet to solder together ).....    Can check out in the DIY forum under. Rebuild Goodmans Magnum K .....

Your SL seem to have the same mid driver which is a real gem .....    very heavy magnet and sounds clean and authoritative.......    Your Bass woofers are different but being 12 inch and very solid I bet they will sound terrific .....    confused about your tweeter as your first picture shows the original ( I guess) Goodmans DT2 or DT3 tweeter but the third picture shows a Philips AD 0160 tweeter which was also used originally in the  Magnum K2........    also,   I would not be surprised if the woofers are common to your SL and the K2 models.   The sensitivity of the K and K2 was around 91 /92 db  so pretty efficient really.

You may find that the specs of the K and the SL could be similar ( and let me say it is quite difficult to get specs on vintage Goodmans ) .......    you could possible use the K Xover diagram to reconstruct your damaged Xovers ( but in this area I am far from wise )

Keep up the posts/photos of your progress ......   will definitely be a worthwhile project .......   good luck.

Just finished reading you post in the DIY section and all the comments. Great content.

It will take me a few months to get together the parts I need for mine. Reluctantly, I'm going to re-foam the woofers and mids, their surrounds are to far gone and not saveable. Which is a shame because I love the inverted glossy look of the bass surrounds as the surrounds on the mids too. That crossover is reparable, I will recap both units. And there's some minor blemishes on the cabinets to attend to, but nothing major.

The grills and badges are in amazing condition.

I will post progress photos and commentary as I go

I've decided not to replace the surrounds on the woofers, the one I could feel a little rub on, turns out it was cone droop. I rotated the driver 180° and it fixed the problem. Ideally, the surrounds need replacing to fix it properly, but I don't want to loose its authenticity with the original surrounds. They are made out of a very unusual material.

As for the mids, they were too far gone, the surrounds on them had detached around the cone and were causing alignment issues. Going to try and source rubber surrounds with an inside lip (where it attaches to the cone) of about 1mm and place it on the underside of the cone. And invert the surround so it matches the woofers.

Turns out while I was there, I thought I'd check the tweeters. Turns out it was open circuit. Pull it apart and you can see the burnt coil, so it's not repairable (see photo). Usually it's just mechanical fatigue that causes a break in the wire, and with a bit of patience, you can normally repair them.

I'll go see Steve at Queensland Speaker Repairs in a couple of weeks and see what my options are as far as parts go.

Keep you posted with after repair picks and what the parts solutions ended up being.

PS. I'm going to do both tweeters and mids.
