Addicted to music Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Anyone taken the free offer to have this done? It was around $10k to go from FTTC to FTTP, but somehow they have decided to upgrade if you go to a FTTP plan. If you’ve had it done, would like to find out how long did it take and what issues up you had. Some have worst dropouts and they can to get it right. Others are flawless….. 1
Ugly Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 NBN tech supposed to be coming to my place tomorrow to do the upgrade. Two prior visits to map out and dig the trench only to decide that it can't go underground for our install. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow (assuming I have internet ) 1
Duncanrw Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 (edited) Am currently going through this myself, original installation date was 4/12/23. postponed by NBNCO, for technical issues, rescheduled to today 19/12/2003. So now waiting. They installed the fibre fairly quickly after initial changeover order placed 13/11/2023 fibre laid/box installed 20/11/2023. I chose a Tangerine Plan 250/25 $64.95 for 6 months. When I had FTTC they had to lay new cable in a trenched pipe, which they used for the fibre. Hey why not , that's what we where promised by NBN for everyone. Only thing seems that Tangerine sales and support seemed to be offshore. Edited December 19, 2023 by DDZIP 1

Did they used the copper access or had to route a different access(digging a trench to route the fibre ) I have concrete over the existing copper access.
aussievintage Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 The first visit to install my free upgrade will be in a couple of weeks. I was told they will bring a camera to see if they can use the existing conduit (my power and copper phone lines all come in underground). Interestingly, I signed up for 100 Mb only a couple of weeks ago, but I am only getting about 78 Mb. They offered to let me downgrade (without me even asking - good on Aussie Broadband), but I am hoping the fttp will get me the full 100Mb, so I am waiting to see. 2

When I had the FTTC installed they laid a new pipe from the pit to the house as they could not find the telephone copper cable, I was on optus cabe then, lets say parts of the copper cable went missing, it would have easily been over 20 years old. they used the new conduit that was laid for the copper fttc for the fibre as well. Must admit this NBNCO technician did a sterling job. in and out completed in 1.5 hrs placed where I wanted, cleaned his mess up. I was up and running in 5 mins 1
Addicted to music Posted December 19, 2023 Author Posted December 19, 2023 I just signed up with ABB for the 250/25 $109 to get FTTP. The next step is 600/50 for $119. I have to admit I was paying $119 when I was with iprimus with ADSL 2+ @$119 b4 2020. Be interesting to see whether they install the access point where I want it or where they can that’s the easiest. I would have though going through the normal copper conduit would be the easiest access and hoped that they don’t have to dig and put a new one in.
Addicted to music Posted December 19, 2023 Author Posted December 19, 2023 So I placed an order last night and this is the reply I got from ABB: Shortly after submitting your order to NBN, they advised us that they had discovered additional complex remediation works may be required in order to deliver the connection. As a result, your order has been placed on hold to allow NBN to carry out these important network upgrades before we can proceed with your connection. NBN has given us an estimated date of **** for when this network upgrade will be completed (if not sooner). We know this news is not great, and we want to ensure you that we’re working closely with NBN to have your order released from hold as soon as possible. These delays are likely impacting a large number of addresses, across all service providers, not limited to us. damn! Did anyone get this?
Duncanrw Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 (edited) Yes and no When I placed my order, the install date was 4/12/2023, then they did the fibre, and shortly after I had the same thing, Infrastructure not available, was 3 week wait then I was given the install date of 19/12/2023. Yes all went well now have 250/20. Was with ABB for a few years, what put me off was the pricing and the fact that when I spoke to them, about upgrading to fibre etc, the person(guy) questioned "why I wanted it." Thought that was a bit rude, said thats what was always promised to us by NBNCO fibre to every home where possible, not this miss mash that the last coalition government gave us. So you took the 6 month deal my 6 month deal is $64.95 they can /will put the outside box where it could be easiser for them, theinside box has to be cloish to a power socket and on the inside of an out side wall. My setup is virtually back to back.

At least you have a date, ABB, has blurred mine out, so looks like they don’t have it scheduled
Steam Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 I am scheduled for upgrade works on Jan 12 2024. Didn’t get any follow up. I do know that the phone pit out front of the house is full of water. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Just to be very clear. It is up to you to decide where you want to the connection, as long as that complies with the installation rules/guide. The installer who comes might want to install it in the "easy" place.... and they might even tell you that you cannot have it where you want it (which gets tricky as they might be misrepresenting your rights to you, or they might be correct --- hopefully an installer can explain "why" they think you cannot have it in the place you decided). It is your responsibility to: Be familiar with your rights, and what is allowed for installs Request what you want from the installer Refuse to accept what you don't want (the install might refuse/leave, and you might have to wait longer) Your ISP can help you to get the right information and understand what is a "standard installation" under the rules. 1
Addicted to music Posted December 20, 2023 Author Posted December 20, 2023 I got onto the nbn FB page and questioned the response. Here’s the reply: Thanks for providing your address, XXXX . According to your FTTP connection order, it is currently in a held status and a planned remediation date has been provided for 30/04/2023. The delay to your fibre upgrade is because nbn has identified additional complex network upgrades are needed before your premises is ready for fibre. This means it will take longer than usual to install. Please note that this delay is not caused by your Service Provider, but is a result of the work that nbn needs to carry out. We will update your Service Provider once your order is ready to progress. In regards to your current internet connection with FTTC, if you are having connection issues, you will need to call your provider and request them to raise a 'service request for a service restoration for FTTC'. Once raised, our support team will work with your provider to help fix this. Thank you, Lachlan. I suppose if I applied earlier it wasn’t going to make a difference as the date for there remediation work is scheduled for 30/4/2023….double damn x2 !
DonGreen Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 (edited) Just thought I would chip in, even though I'm on FTTP in a new development, albeit in rural SA (Mannum Waters, Mannum 5238). Here's the last stats I got from my SamKnows box. Very happy with AussieBroadband. Been with them the whole 5 years we've been in the house, can't recall what the 1 issue was, but resolved quickly and professionally. Price has just dropped from $99 to $95 pm. Not cheap, but worth the price to run 3 Fetch boxes, 1 smart TV 2 laptops and 3 phones on CAT5e and wifi. Service provider: Aussie Broadband Unit ID: .............. Package Min Max Avg 100 Mbps 83.6 Mbps 108.7 Mbps 108.4 Mbps Edited December 20, 2023 by DonGreen Further information 1
Jakeyb77_Redux Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Have just signed up with Superloop to do ours. 1000/50 Installer coming first week in Feb apparently
LogicprObe Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Mine was done in 2015. The records said it was already connected but it wasn't. The fibre was in the pit outside but they never run it in. Things were delayed by some weeks while things were organised. Anyway, they turned up with a DitchWitch trenchless digger, done the cabling to the nearest wall and I was just left with a 30cm square patch in the lawn. Then it was another few weeks because no one in formed the Techs that the cable was in until I rang up to see what the delay was. So, it finally got done..........I'd recommend Aussie Broadband, even though I left to take an Origin offer that was too good to pass up! As for dropouts...........yes, they happen...........especially around billing time.......no matter which provider you go with. (and they don't seem to last very long..........5-10 mins maybe) I know the Commercial offerings are more reliable and get sorted quicker but they are really expensive.
aussievintage Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 My fttp upgrade went smoothly, although NBN were very late arriving - well outside the window they gave. The positioned the box on an internal wall, right where I requested, next to the old phone/DSL socket. Worked first time using my router/modem's default config. Another upvote for Aussie Broadband also. So glad I switched.
Pigpen Posted January 15, 2024 Posted January 15, 2024 Had it completed last Thursday. The NBN tech was genuinely helpful and went beyond the required effort. Ended up with a 250/25 plan with Telstra - working without a hitch so far.
Steam Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 (edited) Seems I lucked out.. I got a terrible tech who was almost non verbal, didn’t answer my questions unless I forced it by repeating myself multiple times, and he told my wife to “Get your husband” when I was not initially present. He clearly didnt want to be here and working NBN. we couldn’t complete the install because I needed to remove a shelf to make space for the “switch” and bracket and he wasn’t waiting (took me 15min). So he said he would be back on Monday - which of course didn’t happen. So now I am waiting until mid February for next install time (meanwhile I have drilled a new hole for the fibre and done a proper job of routing the cable not the half assed job he wanted = fast). All of that would be fine - no rush needed and partly my delay for the shelf issue. Except that my existing FTTN connection is now running at 5Mbps instead of the 70 I got before the visit. About 10 phone calls later I still can’t get someone to explain why. Or fix it. Apparent.y I have an appointment with NBN to fix the problem with FTTn in 2 weeks. Which is stupid since I am changing to fttp. Total disaster. Edited January 16, 2024 by Steam 1

There is no reason to behave like that. We were lucky as we had the upgrade done back in 2021 when we were building our place. They sent an entire team out and spend a fair while digging the road we live on. The upgrade for us was only about $2k but getting them to do it in parallel with the build required a bit of juggling. Their first idea was to do the standard free FTTC connection and then do the FTTP later even though this was more effort and cost for them. Luckily eventually managed to find a sensible person and through a lot of coaxing managed to convince them to do it. 1
IMDave Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 Seems like the NBNCo is likea lot of "big profit-Public Service".....hit and miss. I booked our FTTP connection through ABB on 7th Dec,2023 with a confirmed connection date of Friday 12th Jan, 2024. Received 3 SMS communications from ABB in the week beforehand to confirm this date was still appropriate. I confirmed "Y" each time. At 3pm on Thurs 11th I received an SMS from NBNCo enquiring about the household Covid Status, with a link provided to respond. It looked like a spam SMS, but rather than ignore it I spent 30mins trying to get through to NBNCo via their Contact Us phone number. He advised that technicians regularly do this ( and block their number so you can't call it back!!). So I replied to the SMS confirming we were Covid-free and good to go. At 7pm that night I get an SMS from ABB saying tomorrow's appointment has been cancelled and rescheluded for a date 6 weeks in the future. Not ABB's fault, but WTF NBNCo ??? The guy I was talking to at 3pm said it was booked and ready. First world problems, cause we get a pretty consistent 50Mbs from out 50/20 ABB plan. I just hate being mucked around. 1
Jakeyb77_Redux Posted January 17, 2024 Posted January 17, 2024 Some great advice on here. I have a question if anyone cares to enlighten me. If I’m on the normal NBN now and they do the FTTP upgrade, what’s involved? I’m assuming running the fibre from the street. So wiring and conduit? Do they replace the old NBN white box in the house? I just want to know in advance so I’m not getting screwed over on the job. And make sure that I can get the cabling etc where I want it within reason.

Ask your ISP to give you copy of the guide, which will explain to you where the box can/can't be..... and what counts as a "non standard installation" (one where you will have to pay more for the contractor to carry it out, if they agree to do it .... or if not, for you to get your own contractor in to carry out the non-standard bits of the work). Otherwise, the installer should explain it all to you when they turn up.... but some installers (subbies) are better than others. Edited January 17, 2024 by davewantsmoore 1
