For a long time many members have requested a feature to monitor and/or be notified of certain items being posted to the Classifieds.

We had many attempts at this in the past but ultimately it was near impossible due to the amount of server resources it needed to use to actively monitor and then send notifications.

Recently we discovered a way to do this, and I have now implemented it as a trial.

To activate - head over to Account Settings

Click on Keywords Monitoring (left hand side).

Add the keywords you would like to monitor. It is not case sensitive.

Hit Save.

Finally, head over to your Notifications Settings (Back in Account Settings page, on right hand side).

Scroll down to Keywords Monitoring on New Topics.

Adjust to your desired settings. Enjoy!

Notes:

  • This only monitors the Classifieds subforums
  • This only monitors the Title/Subject of the threads (not the body) due to the resources required.

Please do give feedback here on how it's working (or how it isn't), and/or any changes or improvements that could be made.

I've set it up, more for testing purposes than anything, although you never know!

How long does it take to send a notification after an ad is live?

In my testing it was instant. I'm monitoring it, to ensure that as more people set up notifications that it doesn't lag.

I would appreciate feedback and happy to post some test ads with your keywords triggered if you let me know what you've set up.

Don't forget that it only monitors the topic/ad title/subject, not anything that's contained within the body of the ad.

Just did another test, and the notification (both inline, and email) were instant.

Hey Marc I set up Linn as a monitored keyword and this ad was posted recently. I received 3 separate notifications for some reason. If I click on the notifications they all take me to the same ad. Just wanted to let you know.

Thanks for letting me know. Yes I also received a double notification today - am looking into it.

Thanks - there's a small list of refinements to make this week already. It will only get better and more effective.

Just got 6 notifications for a new Naim ad. Wanted to let you know in case you're monitoring it.

Apart from multiple notifications it seems to be working well.

Cheers.

Yeah we're working on it. But do keep letting me know please 🙂

I'm hoping to have an updated script ready to upload by late this evening (damn kid's school concerts!) - but I think it's worth leaving this activated and putting up with additional notifications for the time being (rather than disabling it completely)?

I'm yet to do some tests, but as of now I believe the duplicate notifications should be resolved.

It seems to be (weirdly) something to do with Naim .... Looking into it and thanks for letting me know.

Hi @Marc, although I see you have temporarily disabled the feature I thought I'd let you know I have received 5 emails ... one on Friday and four yesterday. Only one of them was a duplicate (and only received it twice). This will be great when debugged and my experience has been much better than Darryl's NAIM issue. Cheers

Thanks. We were confident we were getting close to resolved - and introducing some improvements also. Coding ...... !

Could I ask a favour and ask that you remove your notification keywords please?

You were one of the first to add them, and the problem at the moment doesn't seem to be affecting others (that I am yet aware of) that may have added their keywords after we made some updates. Wondering if that might be throwing us off track a little.

Don't re-add any just yet, in your case.

FYI: got one notification for one iteration of keyword appearance. Tick and check, very good functionality thank you.
