fordriver1 Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 Hi all, Planning HT setup in new build. Wanting a 4k projector- budget is 3k. Had a BenQ W1070 1080p projector for a number of years and loved it. Room will be quite dark with dark walls (and ceiling if beneficial) Happy to by used too. Recommendations? thanks!
BRS Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 A secondhand Epson TW9400 should fit within your budget. Not that easy to find but maybe a post on "Want to Buy" will bare fruit. I was ready to buy the 9400 till I realised I couldn't make it fit in my setup due to throw distance. I ended up with TW7100 (4k but not native 4K) which will fit within your budget new. Good luck.
hopefullguy Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 hi mate, my opinions are based on entry level ht, use of w1070, currently w1110 and epson ehtw8200 all 1080p. i went the .. panasonic dpub420 route for watching 4k disks. the tone mapping makes 4k look great on my often maligned 1080p pjs. ok what pj for you, if you are use to the w1070 you wont find the epson as "sharp" i use the epson for movies only and the w1110 for gaming. the 9400 is a big improvement and along with the 8400 the best lamp based pjs epson ever made. IF you can find one 2nd hand it will be over $3k because sellers know people want them. as for doing a w.t.b. ad good idea as long as you are awake to scammers, they will be waiting for you. the benq new models i am not sure of but there would be some new. 2nd hand a w2700* (its an improved w2700) usually under $2k. they fixed any bugs, do not buy a w1700 they didnt fix the bugs. other than epson and benq i wouldnt bother.

fordriver1 Posted December 9, 2023 Author Posted December 9, 2023 thanks for replies. Is it a good idea to go for a 16:9 screen or the wider screen?
Craigandkim Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 (edited) 21 minutes ago, fordriver1 said: Is it a good idea to go for a 16:9 screen or the wider screen? Again depends on what movies you mainly watch - how many movies do you have in 2.39:1 vs 1.78/1.85:1 and what compromise you're prepared to accept - 16:9 screen = smaller picture from 2.39/2.40:1 or scope screen = smaller 16:9 image. You need to consider projection distance, projector zoom capabilities & light output etc. Look at matching screen size with projectors capabilities so that you end up getting optimum picture quality for the expenditure - your light controlled room is a great start. Personally with 4k resolution, I prefer to zoom and fill my 110" scope screen Again personal preferences you have many options to consider Edited December 9, 2023 by Craigandkim text

BRS Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 35 minutes ago, fordriver1 said: thanks for replies. Is it a good idea to go for a 16:9 screen or the wider screen? I have 16:9 so can't speak for scope. I wanted the biggest screen I could fit into my situation. I watch only via Apple tv 4k. I don't buy discs because I rarely watch a movie twice. I'd say maybe 70% of what I watch is in scope, so I have black bars, which I hate but put up with it because my TW7100 doesn't have digital zoom and won't let you zoom a scope image to 16:9 if in 4ke mode. Although I have noticed that sometimes content streamed from Apple tv I can zoom in 4ke mode and it's great. Maybe look to get a PJ with motorised zoom. TW9400 supports this but as I mentioned earlier I couldn't make it fit in my room.
hopefullguy Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 (edited) hi again, my screen experience is limited to the cheaper end, of course. i made a 123" 16:9 screen out of curtain block out cloth that did really well with my w1070/w1110/ehtw8200. cant say how it would go on 4k as it is being replaced with a 154" 2.35:1 spandex A/T screen. that decision was made by mistake in my smaller HT room which is only 2.4m wide. i have a 92" Grandview screen (quite over rated imo) and one day took it down for some reason what ever. i forgot i had an old roll up grey blind from the 80's that covered the entire wall/window. so i tried it out. seeing the image go from one wall to another changed everything. thats why the 154" screen, just short of wall to wall in the main room (still in re furbish mode) but we tested it with the ehtw8200 at 6meters and were able to fill the 2.35:1 screen by showing a 163" 16:9 image..looked great. even from the front row about 3.3m away.i think the 154" 2.35: will show a 132" 16:9 image, but thats only going to come into play for the odd game of C.O.D., old school not online junk. as my ceilings are 3.1m high there is no way i can fill that height wise so not bothered, all triple black velvet anyway so no light reflection, wont really see where the wall and ceiling are. we ONLY watch physical disks in the main HT room, so work out what you like to watch and go from there. Having said that at 16:9 that size would fall into the 'extreme' immersion zone. not so with 2.35:1 1

hopefullguy Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 hmm how big is your room? as for extreme immersion you dont get that with a 120" unless sitting close., 3m or less. when you watch a typical movie that is "wide screen" the black bars means the movie is a reduced size anyway so 16:9 wont do much in that situation. thats why with the epson i would actually use the front wall as an entire painted screen. then you can store sizes in the epson and adjust as you like. painted correctly its better than a screen anyway as long as you do the ceiling, side walls and floor correctly and dont have any silly fancy lighting on the front stage for distraction. front stage area should be black.
Hi-Fi Whipped Posted December 10, 2023 Posted December 10, 2023 I second the Epson 9400, sure not native 4K but the colours make up for it, it has a beautiful picture. i use a 16:9 screen which is 135” projecting from around 4m and it fits perfect. Couldn’t be happier and i chose 16:9 because the majority of my viewing is 16:9 via an Apple TV 4K so really comes down to what you watch majority of the time. 1
BRS Posted December 10, 2023 Posted December 10, 2023 I'm sitting 3m from a 16:9 110" screen and am pretty happy. Immersion is a bit based on perception/what your used to. My borther in-law doesn't go to the cinema much, if at all and has a 50" TV. He reckons it's like watching a game of tennis. I reckon go for the biggest screen you can make work and enjoy.

Agree with as big as you can, I’ve never heard anyone downsize a screen, the first week you may think it seems too big, but after that it becomes the norm and hugely enjoyable having a big screen, I’m still in awe of mine after 6 months tbh.

thebox_4k Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 (edited) If you're in the market for a UST projector, I highly recommend checking out the Hisense PL1H. I've been very happy with its performance. It uses 4K pixel shift though. The native 4K may not justify the cost for everyone, especially considering that many movies are not filmed or mastered (DI) in native 4K resolution. Edited February 29, 2024 by thebox_4k
