TOPSHELF Posted November 28, 2023 Posted November 28, 2023 Hi Brains Trust, I'm looking for a cost effective battery powered headphone amp. It will be used to listen to my headphones on a plane. So 3.5mm in and 3.5mm out, I get the audio on planes is ordinary but just want to be able to hear it. Don't need an amp dac combo but would consider it if the headphone side is decent. It will be powering my Grado's. Thanks for your help. Ian.
Neo Posted November 28, 2023 Posted November 28, 2023 Grados on a plane, interesting choice. What’s your budget as that will dictate recommendations? Neo 1

TOPSHELF Posted November 28, 2023 Author Posted November 28, 2023 Hi Neo, I know it has made me think about open backs on a plane but I just don't really use headphones and have these sitting in a cupboard. Budget up to $150 maybe a bit more if there is good reasons to do so. I did call Addicted to Audio this evening and will definitely call in to see them. I'm probably scared of walking out of there with cans and an amp that will only get used twice a year.......
mwhouston Posted November 28, 2023 Posted November 28, 2023 The one in the middle $45 including postage. 6.5mm phono jacks but you can use adapters. http://retro-thermionic.blogspot.com/2020/09/retro-k465-portable-headphone-amp.html 1
TOPSHELF Posted November 28, 2023 Author Posted November 28, 2023 Hi Mark, Thanks I'll look into this. Always had a soft spot for your mimic phono. This would probably suit. So it's 6.5 in 6.5 out? I'd then need a 6.5 to 3.5 lead to connect to the plane 3.5 adapter I have? 1

GregWormald Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 I really love my Headstage Arrow: tiny, light, flexible, plenty of power for most Grados or Meze Classics, long battery life. Unfortunately probably only available on the 2nd hand market. 1
TOPSHELF Posted November 29, 2023 Author Posted November 29, 2023 Hi All, Thanks everyone for your replies. I just can't go past Marks offer of the one offered for the money..... I'm now very tempted to get some closed back headphones for the plane.... Cheers Ian.
