almikel
Hi guys, the other thread I started on my mid woofer boxes showed how many projects are underway or being planned for Paul Spencer's "Point Source Elliptical" PSE-144s - and some of them are mind boggling. This thread is to let other's know what system you're building or planning for your PSE-144 if you feel like sharing... For those unfamiliar with the PSE-144, Paul Spencer launched down a development path to create a DIY version of Tom Danley's Synergy in a 2 way configuration. The goal was to control directivity down to the Shroeder frequency (ie where modal behaviour takes over - approx 200-300Hz depending on the room) - I'm sure there were many more design goals, but I'll let Paul expand if he's inclined. Development started with the S1 (square pyramid) then S2 (rectangular pyramid), and ended up elliptical as the PSE-144. early pictures of the PSE144 off Paul's blog (redspadeaudio.com): Paul offered the opportunity for others to join him as part of the development process which is now nearing fruition, and myself and others are building systems around the "soon to arrive" PSE-144. I've copied some info from the other thread to get the ball rolling... My planned setup: 4 way active PSE144 top end (2 way) - 25W chip amp for tweeters, 70W Rotel for midrange stereo AE TD18s in 60 litre Redspade flatpack boxes (currently building) - 400W Biema into 4ohms (Q250) Redspade T20 tapped horn (2 x Rythmik 12" + 2 x Rythmik plate amps) (to be built) DEQX HDP3 as the pre-amp and Xover for the PSE144 + TD18s + tapped horn (3 way) dbx 2/3/4 LR4 fed from high pass of the DEQX to split the 2 way within the PSE144 From Matt (Bigmattyevans) Stereo B&C 21SW150 drivers for the sealed bass bins, sub later. Posted by Mal (Malcolm) - one of these is his, one is Roger's (Antripodean), and I don't know who is building the 3rd - all 3 amazing!: Set Up 1 : A pair of AE TD18's per channel in sealed 90litre cab's crossing over to the PSE with BMS CD all active . The TD18's in a sealed 90 litre cab sound great already . Sub's - 2x 200litre sealed Maelstrom 18's ,2x 12" Alpine 12D4 dual opposed, 2x AE PB 10" dual opposed ,yes 6 subs all up . Set Up 2 (NIKO) Pair of AE PB18's ,one per channel 6 cubic foot BR box with passive xover all Celestion mids & CD on the PSE144 . PSE powered by a parafeed 300B SET amp and PB18's powered by solid state with DSP . Sub's not decided ,might borrow the dual opposed Alpine's. Set Up 3 (Mal's) A pair of AE TD18's per channel in a 6cubic foot BR box in MTM .PSE144 with BMS CD tube active xovers PSE powered by a pair of 300B SET amp and the TD18's powered by GU50 PP mono's with DSP on 18's . Sub's - Pair of T20 Tapped Horns using dual opposed 12" Alpine 12D4 drivers powered by solid state amp & DSP. Please try to keep discussion related to systems based on the Redspade PSE-144 (Mike Seddon - your 3 way Synergy build is amazing and deserves its own thread!). cheers Mike Edited December 30, 2013 by almikel
Malcolm
Hi Mike Set Up3 is mine has the WAF factor . Set Up2 is forum member NIKO .He's a little bit sub shy but we will change that . A ruff pic of the bass cab's I'm planning ,the PSE144 will slide in the middle . Cheers Edited December 30, 2013 by Malcolm
almikel
Hi Mal, They will be fantastic! How will you build the curved mid bass boxes? Is it a tube based Xover? Mike
Malcolm
Hi Mike Curved cab's add complexity to the build then throw in radius edges just to make it harder .I've worked out a way of building it ,need to polish up on my old coach building skill's . Lucas at Black Art Audio will be drawing up the circuit for the line level active tube xover might build it into my pre .I like tube's and copper ,copper speaker cab's . hochopeper
I know the -144 in PSE-144 has a totally different meaning but ... I thought I'd point out that -144dB is the SNR of a perfect 24bit signal ... must have double meaning hey Paul?
davewantsmoore
Similar theme for me. PSE144. Direct radiator midbass sealed box. Tapped horn subwoofer(s). I don't quite know which midbass driver I will use... but a driver from AE is definitely a candidate. I plan to build my own boxes (and TH design), but if I get lazy or busy, I will default to Paul's plans for those. Active crossovers... My crossovers will be (while initially testing and planning) minidspHD ... and then later a computer/software DSP crossover into an Amamero+Buffalo+Ivy My amplifiers will initially be an 8-channel home theatre power amp ... and later, will depend. I have many candidates on the shelf, or can build / buy / modify. I have 1w, 2w and 8w SE triodes, some low power SS amps ... and some much higher (100w) power amps (ME, Naksa, etc). Life is easy (class A, no feedback, etc.) when you have such acoustic efficiency Bass traps = as much as possible 2015? ... I will integrate them as LR in a surround setup.... which is a whole other story of what I've got coming there. I'm hoping for "epic" (9.4) Edited December 30, 2013 by davewantsmoore
Malcolm
Dave have you had a look at the Bodzio Ultimate Equalizer .Was looking at building up a PC for the 4way I need to finish . Roger's half way through a Bodzio build . Amps for the Mid's & BMS CD . The smaller amp I'm getting new OPT bobbins made to suit the BMS CD . Roger's half way through a Bodzio build . Yes, I have been following Bohdan for years now... but I have never spent enough time with SE to do it justice... it is on the list for sure, but I might also end up with Accourate first <shrug> ... It's a job for 2014. Amps for the Mid's & BMS CD . The smaller amp I'm getting new OPT bobbins made to suit the BMS CD . I'd be interested to know what the change is and how it helps :-) I'll keep my eyes out for your thread or whatever.

NYCone
What are the thoughts about the Celestion CD vs BMS 4550?
Malcolm
Paul has tested a number of CD's and once the crossover is optimized for each very hard to tell the differences between the CD's . Plus the Celestion Pauls has chosen preforms extremely well . Roger ( Antripodeon ) and myself both have the BMS 4550 and will be setting up the PSE-144 with the Celestion CD and Pauls optimized crossover to start with .AT a latter stage once the bass modules are sorted and integrated then we will look at the BMS either passive or active solution . \ Step 1 .Celestion CD with Pauls optimized crossover . Step 2 .Optimize Bass active crossover to PSE-144 & room measurements Step 3 .Throw in some room treatment's after room measurements Step 4 .Look at BMS4550 either passive or active crossover While all these steps are taking place keep up with house duties and keep the WIFE happy Cheers Mal Edited January 18, 2014 by Malcolm

Ok. Great. One of the only "gotchas" I can think of here is the driver to throat transition. Is the BMS the same as the Celestion? This will be my first time using a compression driver for high quality home audio. I am wondering how I will find the performance above the cone breakup .... if that will be inaudible at such low power .... and if there will be a dedicated HF channel in my future. Dr Good Vibe
Going to soffit a pair into the studio most likely with a pair of 15" each side I believe burnt orange, will test them around the place in other corners until room is ready they can sit on top of two 40 Ltr boxes I have sitting around on both sides, 80 Ltr both sides.
gainphile
Very nice! What is the dimension of the horn at its horizontal length ?
davewantsmoore
Jealous. After much 2ing and fro-ing... soffit arrangement is not going to work in my room (as in, it won't fit). This means I'm stuck again with dealing with the serious problems which it solves, especially for the midbass sound ... and I am sad about that ... but still looking forward to the adventure.
