Absolutely, now listening to Buika, very interesting. Did you hear Mokoomba- hard not to. Very good bass player. Also enjoying the food, had a great pulled pork burrito with excellent hot sauce

Spending today recovering from a Womadelaide long weekend.

Highlights for me:-

Billy Bragg - strong stage presence, great band and interesting banter between songs (much of it political, of course). There seems to be a bone of contention between Mr Bragg and Pokey LeFarge, as each had a bit of a dig at the other in their performances.

Breabach - I love this sort of music, and their performance was a ripper. My only complaint was that the sound engineer had the volume way too loud for the Moreton Bay stage. There was audible distortion. (What is it with some of these sound guys? Probably thinks everything should sound like hip-hop!)

Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen - mouthful of a name, but great performance of New Orleans style jazz/blues whatever.

Pokey Lefarge was a surprise. Initially I thought the name and image might be a bit contrived, but Pokey and his band put on a great performance.

Others I enjoyed were the Chinese bands Hanggai and Shanren, although they both have gone a bit too electric for my liking. Would prefer a bit more of a traditional sound.

I also enjoyed the Balanescu Quartet, for something a bit different (an Eastern European history listen of sorts).

Makana was good too, nice acoustic performance.

Sam Lee was interesting, with his take on old English folk songs. I'm not sure that the instrumental arrangements always suited the songs that well, but he has quite a good voice. Would like to have heard him do a couple of songs acapella. I think he is relatively new to the scene (only has one album out, I believe), so probably one worth watching.

I wasn't expecting too much from Saskwatch, but they were surprisingly good. (Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised.)

Osaka Monorail were fun, looking a bit like a bunch of Japanese Blues Brothers!

I personally didn't care much for Arrested Development. Hip-hop is not my thing, just sounds all the same to me. The only part of their performance that I liked was their rendition of Bob Marley's Redemption Song, which they did quite well (and it wasn't hip-hop).

I'm afraid some of the performances on the big stage (eg: Makoomba, Femi Kuti, Rachid Taha and a couple of others) didn't do much for me. Too many bands just seem to be over-amplified, too busy on stage, with very average songs. If you walk back a fair way from the stage and listen from a distance, a lot of it sounds pretty ordinary. (Probably showing my age a bit now.)

Unfortunately I missed Roberto Fonseca. By all accounts he was quite good.

Oh, and the Slow Dancing video projection display was quite mesmerising. Popped by that several times during the weekend.

I agree re the big stage acts.If I hear another artist say "jump, jump, everybody jump" again,I'll scream. Dub Inc,La Chiva Gantiva and Femi Kuti did it and it seemed to go on forever. Mookomba were a lot better on stage 3.I didn't like them at all on the main stage

My highlights were Roberto Fonseca and band.He played for 90 minutes last night.Definitely the highlight for me.

The Balanescu Quartet were great, particularly the night they performed the Maria T suite on stage 2.

Pokey La Farge's set on Monday was great. The surprise packet that Womad throws up every year.He must've been well liked, judging by the number of people lined up for the cd signing.

When I got my discs signed by Alexander Balanescu and Antonio Serrano,I was the only one there. At least I got to talk to them for a few minutes.

Other highlights were Ane Brun,Jon Cleary,Carminho(what a beautiful voice) and Asif Ali Khan and troupe.

And not forgetting all the beautiful, tanned skinny legs and pretty women. All in all another perfect 4 days, though by about 9:30 last night I started suffering from Early Onset Post Womad Depression.

I'm getting better though:-)

For those who were at Womadelaide, did anybody spot this furry spectator high up in a tree overlooking stage 3?

Looks like you're the last man standing here, mrbuzz. Love dub colossus.

I keep thinking that I should stop buying Rabih abou Khalil - surely I have enough of his stuff? But each new album I buy is wonderful and surprising - the latest I just bought is Hungry People - really fresh and alive music. I don't know Tarab - must search it out.

Hi buddeyev.

I picked up that Rabih album at Title for a fiver. If you live in Sydney it might be worth a trip to Surry Hills.Be warned though. There's thousands of discs in the back room all for $5, including boxed sets. You might be busy for quite a while.

Tarab's a nice album.Glen Moore of Oregon fame plays bass on it.And of course there's that beautiful Enja packaging-purple this time with gold metallic inlay.Em Portuguese,a later release by Rabih is worth auditioning.Very nice.

Have you got the Dub Colossus double re-mix album of Addis...? I heard it's very good.Might have to add it to the list.
