Hello,

is someone able to point me in the direction of a NAS that’s suitable for Roon? I’ve read the Roon website which provides some recommendations, but they are a little bit dated. I’m hoping someone who can easily recommend some 2023 models.  I know I need 8 GB of ram and a quad core processor as a minimum. I’m just not too sure about what kind of processor I should be looking for.  I’m keen on Synology because I understand its interface is relatively easy to use.

Thank you in advance

Are you intending to use it as your Roon Core as well as a NAS folder to point Roon at for your own music files? If so, go a bit harder than their recommendation on RAM and processor especially if you are going to be doing DSP/convolution etc etc. For choosing which quad core, my recommendation is always "P for plenty" - again, go hard and provide yourself with some future-proofing (as much as can be done in the world of tech and Moore's Law observations). I'd advise you to spend what you can within reason. Disk is cheap, so go for a chassis with more slots to allow you to expand your storage easily too.

I used to use my Synology 1512+ as a Core, but migrated that off to a ROCK on a NUC a while ago. My 1512+ is getting a bit long-in-the-tooth now so I just use it as a file repository these days. Testament to its durability though, it is 10 years old and still bulletproof.

I wouldn't dismiss QNAP either, although I have no direct experience, reputation with Roon folk is that they are pretty good too.

I have the Roon server on my Syno DS918+, which is not quad core, but it works fine. I have the server files and database mounted on an Samsung T7 external SSD drive connected via USB as recommended by Roon. The music files are on other conventional drives in the NAS. I would like a higher spec'd NAS to be honest, but this seems to work ok.

@MattyW??

I wholeheartedly agree with this:

I'm using a PC (not a NAS) for Roon - with a 12-core i7 processor & 16GB of RAM.  When running Roon Convolution it seems to use about 5% of the available processing power.

Don’t disagree with the PC approach. Would probably prefer Roon core on my Mac Mini, which I have had before quite successfully, but the Mini’s not set up at present

I run this one and it’s absolutely fantastic for running RoonOnNas and Plex. Add a Synology SSD for read caching and some extra ECC RAM and you’re golden. Western Digital Red hard drives are excellent

Which one?

Sorry, the DS1621+

Suggest setting up using SHR2 as that makes capacity upgrades and drive replacement very simple indeed. ;)

Performance is excellent. I’ve even run a few virtual machines from the NAS though couldn’t think of a compelling reason to keep using them so it’s really just used for network shares, torrent downloads, Roon and Plex servers. Fantastic for that. It’s safe behind a firewall and just has ports open for Roon ARC. I use a VPN to my Firewalla Gold to access anything remotely so things are pretty secure.

I’ve separate Wireless SSID’s for Internet of Things devices, regular use and guests as I do worry about network security. If I ever want to host a site I’ll get another NAS and run off a separate VLAN. Keep things secure.

I’ve regular snapshots set up for the Roon database so I’m not reliant on the Roon scheduled backups as I don’t find those especially reliable. If music playback is ongoing the backup fails but snapshots are reliable and can be easily restored. Means I can roll back Roon updates if necessary also. ;)

Yes I want to use the NAS to run the Roon program on a separate SSD as recommended.  I agree that it always better to pursue higher specs but I want o get a sense of which models would meet the threshold of being able run Roon. Thank you for your tips.  I will check out QNap also.

I have 2011 Mac Mini.  I’d assumed that Mac Mini 2011 could not properly run a Roon.  Maybe I should test it.

Thank you for these tips though I don’t understand all of the technical stuff you outlined.

Basically you can run a whole lot of other stuff than just Roon, and do it more reliably than a PC based experience. The learning curve is less than most competing products.  🙂

Initially I was using a basic 2011 Mac Mini and it worked fine for normal use. Not sure that it would have coped with significant upsampling, convolution stuff etc. I did eventually  pimp the Mini with extra RAM and an SSD, I am sure it would be fine

Yes I’d like to run other applications beyond Roon too.

Synology Surveillance Station is a good one, allowing you to run Synology comparable security cameras. Ditto Plex Server, Synology Download Station for torrents/magnet links etc.

For me, being able to take scheduled snapshots of the entire Roon install is invaluable. Once in a blue moon it saves many headaches. ;)
