What’s the pricing and where is this model sits in the line up?

Neo

According to a poster on the Zidoo forum $1999 USD.

As to where it sits in the line up, I'm not sure, it's purely 2ch apparently but does have the pre amp feature/hardware.

Sandu has done a review. Upgrades from A6 appear to be dedicated dual PS, AKM DAC chips over ESS and R2R preamp. The DSP function appears to be quite powerful. Digital output has I2S..

If you’re using the A6 as a pure streamer, I’d stick with it, wonderful unit despite some software glitches. If you’re going to use the functionality, then A8 may be worth it.

I have one incoming. Will post some thoughts.

"Hi-Res Audio & Master Recording Decoding

The DMP-A8 is Hi-Res Audio certified by JAS, which equates to guaranteed superior sound quality.  Almost all ultra-high sampling master recording formats are supported by DMP-A8, including CD-quality formats (FLAC, WAV, APE), DSD512 (.dsf/.dff/.iso/.dst) stereo/multichannel and MQA. MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) technology enables you to play back MQA audio files and streams, delivering the sound of the original master recording."

How does it do multichannel audio with no HDMI output.

It mentions HDMI ARC in the overview

Initial thoughts.

  • Build quality is the same as A6 - so good
  • Interface and setup like the A6 - easy
  • Not Roon ready! - yet!
  • I'd say tonal quality and overall SQ is quite similar to A6 - the Eversolo "house" sound.
  • R2R Preamp is quite lovely to use, tactile and exact. No obvious improvement in SQ over digital volume in A6 though
  • Need to find time to use DSP function

TLDR - If you have an A6, you'd be pushed to find dramatic improvements with the considerable $$ increase in A8. If you're using A6 as a streamer/end point only, then it's no contest. The preamp function on the A8 is very good but I'm unsure if it's any better than the digital version in the A6 or things like Leedh. SQ impressions are similar to the A6, perhaps more space and fluidity - whatever that means. I need to use the DSP.

I need more time with it and it may need to burn-in too, if you believe that sort of thing.

I bet you have the A6/A8 stacked on top of each other.... 😅

should people wait for the master version of the A8?

My feeling is that it depends on whether the "master" version of the A6 was worth the $$ in SQ improvements. I liken this to the KTE versions of the Holo gear and further to the car industry where they add things like spoilers to existing vehicles. Is it a noticeable improvement in performance or simply a profit grab. Many manufacturers feed our FOMO and create tiers of ownership. Given how quickly Eversolo brought out the A8, maybe wait for an A10, 20, etc.

What I'd like to see is a version that had less bells and whistles to bring the price down.

A streaming transport with no DAC but keep the touch screen for the album art, and the relevant outputs.

At the right price this would be a winner!

I think you are missing the point of a good streamer/DAC.  Done properly, a good one will beat the SQ of an equivalent streamer + DAC + cable, without having to spend the time, effort and money to stitch all 3 parts together.

Agree. The idea of seperates is that you can get the best unit for each function and that "should" result in better SQ than an AIO. However, the biggest problem with that is synergy. I believe synergy between components (let alone cables) is an overlooked area. I've had great components not play well with each other and sound worse than lesser regarded items. A good AIO like the Lumin P1 (or T3) can be a very good thing. Other less obvious AIOs include Mola Tambaqui, Gustard R(A/D)26, Emm Labs MA3, Naim Uniti AtomHE etc.

I've been looking for a streamer/dac/pre-amp with arc-HDMI and analogue input.

I am aware of many streamer/dac/pre-amp but the requirement for both ARC HDMI input and analogue input has drastically cut the list down.

Besides the Lumin P1 that @maximus mentioned, there is the NAD M66, Matrix Audio Element X2,  X2 Pure, Simaudio Moon 791, 891. The Eversolo A8 is certainly value for money...
