One of the things I like about attending hifi shows is discovering new artists, rediscovering negleglected/ignored artists, and sometimes even new genres of music. Many times I have heard an often-repeated song played at the hifi show and thought "I want to find that track or search for more by that artist". My discovery this year was African jazz musician Hugh Makesela. I heard him played through a system comprising Dohmann Helix turntable, Thrax monoblocks, and B&W 800 D3 speakers. The percussion was DYNAMIC, and the flugel horn had that nice brass sound which is simultaneously metallic and warm. I checked the album back cover and identified 'Analogue Productions, 45rpm' - search!

I would like to acknowledge those exhibitors who facilitate requests by providing the options of turntable, CD and streaming. Some exhibitors seem limited to certain types of music, artists or a few songs, which may make it easier for them to run the show, but not so interesting for the visitors. Some of them have curated eclectic demo tracks which are usually interesting. Telos and Mcleans usually don't disappoint in my experience. This year, the Hulgich/Holton room was playing good music.

Hifi is not just about gear-porn. The music is the reason. Often, I come across a room bristling with gear and accessorised to the max, then I listen to the music, and wonder "what's the point?" Having said that, music is a most enjoyable experience when shared, and there will be times when one needs to put up with it rather than complain or behave disrespectfully. Just accept that tastes vary, and no music will please everyone all of the time.

A couple of rooms played tracks by Holly Cole, I'm interested to hear more of her.

There were a few other artists/albums played that I now wish I had written names down - the show's too big to be able to rely on my memory!

The Osborn room played the record of  Louis Armstrong's Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None Of My Jelly Roll album - wonderful to hear music from 60 years ago without modern compression.

We played over 30 albums (one side each) in the Record Room over the 3 days.

A real mixed bag of old and new ...everything from Hundredth and War on Drugs, thru to Meat Loaf.

If you liked something there, ask us what, here.

Pardon my ignorance on such matters--but doesn't Shazam work in OZ??

Yep, Shazam is a music lovers best friend in these situations.

Nothing new for me from this show that impressed, but didn't get to hear Deano, but his voice does have a lovely timbre, pity about the muzak itself...

What I am loving is the vinyl soundtrack from Atomic Blonde, I've never had a soundtrack overwhelm me soo much when watching a movie before. Teenage memories I guess.

I believe so, but I'm the Australian who doesn't have a mobile phone so I miss out on a lot of things like Shazam!

There was a song that was played in the VAF room and then in another room. Bluesy, very deep vocal, male. Sparse musical arrangement. Never want to hear it again.

Did the lyrics refer to "sanctuary"?

Pretty sure that’s it.

Yeah, I had the feeling that I should like it, but it didn't gel.  No idea who it was though.

I'm super impressed by Dean Martin's voice playing in the Kharma room.

Dream with Dean available on 180g vinyl ?

No Sanctuary here by Chris Jones on Stockfisch.
The album is mainly like that, daggy musak style but one of the ultimate demo albums if that makes sense?
Yeah I don't play it much either! [emoji53] 1539635504793

Chris Jones. That’s it. Thanks Clive.

Maybe not a musical discovery that many  would enjoy but I would like to thank Rick  @coffeemachinist  from Lucie speakers who patiently responded series of back and forth personal messages from me chasing up a demo song he used in his room.

The song was Mrs Cold by Kings of Convenience .

To me actions like this indicate that anyone interested in Lucie Audio could expect an outstanding level of interest and support.

Cheers

Mike

Yes, that's what I recalled.  In one of the other rooms one of the visitors was trying to get the demonstrator to find some Chris Jones to demo, I think they were looking for No Sanctuary Here, but ended up playing some other of his music which I didn't mind.  In hindsight I am grateful not to have heard No Sanctuary again.

For those who do want to hear it, here it is (sorry, I don't seem to be able to delete his other video below that posted in error):

I heard Candyflip's rig which had some good moments (Big Star's first) and some great moments (Hoodoo Gurus) but I fled when Meatloaf was put on the platter. I did read the wikipedia entry on Meatloaf and my goodness it's fannish in the worst sense.

The B&Ws took Joy Division's Atmosphere and pulled it apart to cruelly expose Martin Hannett's downpitching of Ian Curtis's lead vocal. But as an audition track for percussion and keyboards it succeeded.

I don't know who was playing Muddy Waters Folk Singer (first floor, second right after turning left at the top of the stairs from the ticket booth) but that was a mighty fine setup and best in show from my limited sample. I had only ever heard of the album and now on listening I understand why it's a classic. Thank you.

I had ‘feel like going home’ from the folk singer album on pretty heavy rotation @ThirdDrawerDown, was it one of the small rooms? It has some stunning dynamics, would have been great to hear it on other systems with some real heft to the bottom end.

From looking at the floorplan it could have been room 1206, which had Epsom / HIFISTAY / Onkyo / Polk Audio / Samsung / SolidSteel.

I missed hearing Muddy, I would have liked to have experienced it.

On the back of an idea floated by @Marc, let's try and have an influence on some of the music we'll hear at the StereoNET Hi-Fi show.  It happens every time that people complain about what they listened to after the show has ended.  Well, this thread is created well in advance, and @Marc said he'll link the exhibitors in to this thread, so here's our opportunity to have a positive affect.  Let's keep it constructive.  Not everyone is going to like the suggestions, so put forward your own and we'll see what comes up.  I expect it will be a diverse bag.

I'll kick it off -

Sade - Smooth Operator

Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City

Icehouse - Great Southern Land
