I’m assuming that there are a fair number of it wizards here,. I’ve been using last pass for a while. It seems pretty good , but I’m wondering if google has caught up

Posted (edited)

I guess the word "better" needs some unpacking:

More secure: probably even Steven

Functionality-wise: probably yes

communication/transparency: open-ended problem

payscale: about even?

lastpass suffered a major security incident and were less than forthcoming with information regarding scale and severity. that's a cause for concern. Frankly, though, I do not expect google to act any better. Both companies will aim to protect their reputation and positive optics first before any concern for their customers.

(ps. not a wizard, me)

I would not use either of them when free managers like Keepass exist.  It works across Linux Windows MacOS iphone and Android due many and multiple ports of the free software.  I trust it more because the code is open and transparent to anyone.

This is not really answering OP's question.

I use Bit Warden. Free and very good. Sorry for derailing your thread

I was thinking of using LastPass, but then I saw that they'd been hacked or something, and that put me right off. Currently the subject of my procrastination is NordPass. It has 2 versions, free and subscription. If I get my finger out, I may even make a decision by years end!

Google is great for syncing passwords to chrome but little else.

1Password lets you use these credentials across all browsers in your system as well as sync passwords to any devices you have, and, well, Google don’t get to keep it for you.

I’m all for password managers but outside of iCloud’s implementation, they are all at the application layer. You’re much better off with a password manager that can work in non web based apps, can do your mfa rolling tokens for you and automatically copies across all of your devices.

I recently moved from Wintel to Mac and used the opportunity to erase some old tracks and reliance on apps and services that I no longer trust. Whilst I haven't used Chrome for years and moved to Firefox which I have zero security or confidentiality issues with, I still decided to try an alternate password manager.

+1 for 1Password. I'm still on the trial period, but it has already convinced me to flush Firefox's password repository and to migrate 2FA tokens off Google's Authenticator in a few instances too. I dare say other advantages are going to come up sooner or later.

It's truly dynamite. We use it as a corporate repository too and it holds everything like credit card numbers, shared vendor accounts etc and has RBAC via group memberships so you can share selectively too.

I use Lastpass mainly because it allows me to share passwords securely within my family.

Last Pass have been popped twice in recent times. That's enough for me to use something else.

I’ve been using Keeper for the past 7 years. Works seamlessly across all platforms and devices.

Usually you can find a deal on a yearly subscription which makes it quite attractive.

Lots of suggestions, and there are indeed many great products out there.     I do however urge you to consider the extra security of a program that is open source.   Built in malware and security weaknesses will be discovered because of the many and varied people looking over and improving the code.   This is why I suggested Keepass earlier on in this thread.

When you are talking about critical information like passwords, I would never trust ANY commercial company.
