Medium bookshelf speaker for under $2000 - options?

Recommended Posts

Hi All, Im in the market for a decent bookshelf speaker. Ive had my eye on the KRIX Acustix MK2 for a long time and am about ready to commit....BUT, I just want to see if I should be considering anything else?

https://krix.com.au/acoustix-mk2/

Some details.

- 2 channel hifi system with an M&K Sub (MX-145, very old but will use it if needed)

 - System is a ROTEL CD and Receiver ( 2x100w @ 8ohms <0.3% THD)

- Music is wide ranging but sometimes Electronic focused - love solid bass, but also Dire straits, 80's pop etc

- Also will be used for some movies, Youtube, streaming etc.

- Im not "obsessed" with hifi but do love a nice all round system

Im open to suggestions or options, was even thinking of larger floor standers and not using the sub at all but I do like the range and depth a sub gives - on the proviso its tight!

My view is that Krix is best avoided for hi-fi  systems.  I firmly believe that they voice their speakers for 'wow factor' in showroom.  I think you can do (much) better from other brands.  If keen to stick with Australian then suggest look at VAF and Richter.  Much better value, for better sounding speakers at similar pricing imho.

I vote for Adelaide Speakers. I have his Woodfox bookshelves. Great bang for buck. A few people on Stereonet give his speakers a good wrap. Give Edawrd a call.

My 2c.

Old model, ELAC BS244s - overachievers! Should be able to track down a 2nd hand pair for not far north of $1000. Don’t think you’ll need a sub. I have a pair and haven’t upgraded in a long time despite trying out a few options.

Kind regards, Michael

Cheers all so far - some great options there!

I do like the look of the Adelaide Speakers, Im actually speaker-less at the moment as I did have some Aaron Bookshelves that sort of died (tweeter appears to have torn, and Ive had a woofer replaced in the past they were over 20yrs old).

So Australian (SA) speakers seem to be consistently good haha.

These monitors might be the go actually - the M823SQ for under $2k.

Mmmmm. They are Monitor speakers that I think are designed for studio mixing. I would talk to Edward. He is happy to discuss options.

Can't do floorstanders? These would match up well with the Rotel gear if you could manage budget wise.

Hi, um not really in the room. I did have plans to at some stage but Im thinking 5+ years away when they kids grow up and I can have nice things again! 🙂

My advice is use the money saved to invest in some high quality earmuffs for when you have to listen to those B&Ws.  😂

Yeah true. Didn't really think it through considering the room. 😁
