Good morning all.

I’ve recently aquired a Pass labs clone amp here, which is quite low gain. Gain has always been a bit of a mystery to me but I’m getting a bit of an idea now, I’ve been looking into it and it seems that more gain will open up the top end.

im wondering if anyone can recommend a good one that’s under $1000

i be seen a cheapie on Amazon for under $100, but most others are over $2k so far

Not sure what you mean here.  Gain should be the same at all frequencies for a good preamp (unless you use eq or tone controls etc).   It just makes everything louder equally.

Its more complex than that

Nelson Pass SE amps go for very low  output

gain is a feature of some better pre amps such as the better Schitt ones as opposed to the cheaper ones

Yes but I was questioning the "open up the top end" statement.  It should not alter the balance of sound at all.

The topping pre90 is just in your budget. It claims 16dB of gain if that’s enough.
Also if it matters to you, it measures really well
