Since carriers stopped subsidizing phones I now upgrade once every three years instead of every two years. I am amazed that we happy spend more than $2K on mobile phones.

I guess we spend most of our time on these devices and screen quality and battery size now are important factors when buying phones.

I switched over to Samsung many years ago, however I love the look and feel of the iPhone Pro Max. I might crack one day and go back to the Apple iPhone.

True.

My family instead buys used phones, if you know where to look you can find them in amazingly good condition.   The rough rule is:

~3 generations old.   This makes it now the iPhone 12.

$300 .... this is creeping up a little now, they be getting expensive.... but I just checked the iPhone 12 prices, and it's actually not that far off (maybe $400).

Treat them like dirt.  You don't 'baby' your brand new flagship phone.   If you break one, or the battery dies... they get sold / replaced (we have a spare on hand at all times).

People in my family tend to go through about 1.5 phones max each 3 years ... so it works out very cost effective.

I’m usually every 2 generations, and then use the Apple Trade In. But they got me this time with USB-C, and ability to record 4K video to an external drive.

I look forward to playing with one when they hit the stores.  Fascinating to see if there is any noticeable difference in general use compared to 13 and 14

this is what this release is targeting; phone cameras.

It’s also the 1st to have USB-C.    Apple was “forced” to make this change due to EU and from all reports it’s a slap in the face for Apple users as it’s limited to USB 2.0 specs,  then again it’s a phone!   the release comes as intel is about to up the anti on USB-C to a better and higher ground breaking spec.  There’s also a scare mongering report to say that’s it’s only for MFI USB-C Apple charges and nothing else, this is to be confirmed by waiting for field reports to see how it last with a non- Apple charger, possibly implementation to indicate that they didn’t want to go this route with phones and would rather have the lightning cable which I would have thought was no big deal as you can stick the lighting cable USB end on any usb certified charger.
The Pro also comes in a titanium body,  little impact on weight but the advantage here is strength,  so I’m waiting to get my hands on one to play with.   However I won’t be buying one,  work has updated the 7 to the bottom of the range SE.

agreed!

that’s why work has updated the 7 to the bottom of the range SE.   There are lots of good reasons to stick with Apple,  even though there are multiple alternatives that are a fraction of the price.    Not that I appreciate the update, if it was me, at least go 128gb or above to make it useable for 3yrs.   I struggled with 32gb with all the apps that works run and that includes Teams.

I have the same generation SE too. I didn’t know security updates were stopping (where did you see that?). It still works fine but it looks like I may need to upgrade too … grrr…

I was going on information a year ago. I just read this ! Apple released details about iOS 16 today at its Worldwide Developers Conference, including which phones will be eligible for the update — and which didn’t make the cut. To download iOS 16, you’ll need an iPhone 8 or later, meaning Apple is more or less ending support for the iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, and original iPhone SE.

I guess they will still work OK just will not have the latest security...

I had an iPhone 13 mini as a work phone at my last job. I loved it. Sad they are not making them anymore.

I don’t think so,  I received a SE yesterday.   And it’s asked me to update from IOS 16 to 16.6.1

Thanks for the update.I suppose nothing is definite until it happens. Might get another year out of the SE. This was a quote from your link.....

iOS 16, which arrived in September 2022 runs on all iPhones from the iPhone 8 onwards – but do note that not all features are available on the older handsets.

PS I was talking about the Apple iPhone SE · Released 2016,

When I think about it’s funny how we use the good ole mobile phone device.   Since COVID we are forced to used Apps that have flooded the market…. At work,  Teams has basically taken over, SMS usage is rampant….  My boss doesn’t even make a phone call, neither do the office or administration,  it’s all via emails, Teams and SMS.   Not sure what the go here is whether it’s to ensure you get the message legally/officially so you respond.  SMS is a hit and missed affair, it depends on coverage and how busy that tower is as I found out the other day.   MS teams is just brilliant but occupies memory, so if you have the bottom of the line in my case it was a iPhone7 32gb, that occupies your memory resources,  they have had me onto this new SE with 64gb, I’m predicting that it will last 16mths before I find myself struggling and off loading apps to make it workable.   At the time of writing the IOS is 9.01gb and 2.95gb of system….and that’s for IOS 16.6.1.      If you’re thinking about getting a phone, depending on what you use it for,  always afford the one with max storage.
