Mounting Drivers onto Baffle ......... Quick Question !!

Recommended Posts

Quick Question ........

Working on some vintage Goodmans Magnum K ......

Does it make any difference sound wise if I mount the original drivers at the front of the baffle rather than at the back of the baffle  ( which is how they are originally  ) .........   please note that I will not be reselling these so originality  is not an issue .... these are keepers....

I realise if I do this :

-  there will be a slight increase in internal volume. ( they are sealed cabinets and I'm thinking that the tiny volume increase will be not be crucial to sound )

- the original speakers have no attempt at time alignment so if I mount all the drivers on the front it will keep the original distance alignment

My gut feeling based on total ignorance and flying by the seat of my pants is that this will be OK .........    Would love some quick  feedback from the , as always, wonderful and knowledgable Stereonutters out there .....    With thanks.

PS : At a later date in the build, I will be substituting a different tweeter ( got a nice Aurum Cactus ribbon. G3Si which could be interesting as a lot of UK Goodmans sites say that the original Magnum tweeter could be perhaps bettered )    and perhaps a different midrange  ( some vintage Vifa M10MD-39     that are really very nice ).     and they will be mounted on the front or back of the baffle or a mixture of both  .......   anyway, a bit of a play............   but at this stage, just interested in the above quick question.

It is quite in order to mount the bass speakers as you suggest without any detriment to the performance. You will need to consider how to seal the rear of the speaker frame to prevent air leakage.

I would suggest that mounting drivers on the front is the 'normal' method used by most spkr mfrs.

I mean - if the drivers are mounted on the back of the baffle ... how the hell do you get them out of the cabinet, to repair/replace them???

It might improve the alignment???

If you do any driver-swapping ... if the replacement drivers are not the same nominal impedance ... you will have to change component values in the passive XOs.

Thanks andyr  ......   your experience is always very welcome .......   so I think it's a yes to the front mounting ( and yes, getting to the drivers in the original back configuration is certainly a bloody nightmare ) ..........      and at a later date the play with different drivers will definitely be a listen-and -see  approach given potential different impedance   ( and my minuscule understanding of the Dark Arts  of  passive  X -over design ......    one drop of Mordor capacitance mixed with the Resistance of a thousand Orcs should just about do it ..... I think ).   .... all the best.

PS : the Cat cable is lying very peacefully in a quiet drawer awaiting its promised time in the future ........
