Do vinyl record buyers actually play the media they buy?

Recommended Posts

Always wondered when you walk into a JB store where there’s plenty of vinyl that now outnumber the CD section actually play the media.   When you see the younger generation with there wireless earbuds flicking through the selections with a number of records on there hand.   My daughter saids her friends don’t play them, they just buy it for the art work!

When I bought a few Australian LPs listed as NM a few years ago, they played as maybe a G+. They had an oil slick like sheen on them.

When I complained about the sound quality, the response was:

“Why would you play them?”

Crazy.

The only record in my collection I don't play is a picture disc of Hysteria by Def Leppard, as the sound quality is noticeably worse that the black vinyl version I own.  I received it as a birthday present from family when the album was originally released and they were not aware of the difference in sound quality common with picture discs.

Aside from that, I buy vinyl to hear, not as some pretentious trophy.

I'm sorry, the very concept of this just has me scratching my head.

Prefer the quality of older vinyl over anything available in JB, and over the "180gm" or "200gm" re-releases. I do like the size and contents of the LP format, but I wouldn't worry about the condition of the vinyl if I was only looking for the cover...

Absolutely.

Well, except for some 1st issue Beatles picture discs. Partly to avoid wear, maintain value and because picture discs "generally" don't sound as nice as their black version.

I've bought a couple of LPs only to use them as wall cover art.

Fritz the Cat and 2001 A Space Odyssey come to mind.

But I have the movies for these.

I have lots of picture discs that I have never attempted to play, as I know the sound quality on these isn't all that great.

Apparently, less than 50% of today's vinyl buyers own a turntable.

So, by popular vote of vinyl buyers, it's the concept of buying vinyl to play it that is the oddity!

cheers
