Fantastic timing, I'm in Melb for daughters birthday from the Wed 15th -Tue 21st !

@@djb it's your shout and @Eggmiester too, I'm free on all days except the 16th so I'll be lurking looking for a place to lurk at.

Open to suggestions on that front. Stereophonic will be a lurking point as will Tivoli I think. Will bring short arms and long pockets too, particularly while in HiFi stores and at Eggmiesters table, I can probably scratch together enough to get a house red for the pensioner...

I have been to the las two shows. Rarely see anything I like or hear anything I like. But I wouldn't miss it. I wonder what we will see which I new and from who. The Audio Note room is still my fav. I think the only system which sounded natural.

Agree the AN rooms at shows are known for the tasteful and relaxing music and portrayal--welcome relief from some of the incessant ear bashing  prevalent in some quarters.

Incidentally the current economic Audio climate has taken it's toll--

There will be no more THE SHOW at the Flamingo LV next year-RIP!---it used to run concurrently with the CES Hi End at the Venetian

It now will be merged with the 2015 Newport CA THE SHOW at the new venue --The Irvine Hotel

For those travelling from intestate, you will be well advised to book accommodation asap.

I was planning to stay at the Crown Metropol, but discovered yesterday that all rooms have already been booked, and ditto the Promenade and Towers.

Also, with the lack of availability, be prepared to spend in excess of $400 per night if you're intending to stay anywhere near the venue.

Maybe some SNAers close to Melbourne CBD could put someone up for a night!?

Particularly if you are going to the AV Show on the same days...

I tried booking the apartments I stay at when in Melbourne in April for the "Show" weekend. Tried a few others and gave up. Believe the Moto GP and Melbourne Festival are on that time. Won't be there; maybe next time the organisers could avoid a clash with major events. Has cost them at least 2 attendees.

I did wonder what else was on, so thanks for the info.

At this stage it's unlikely that I'll be attending. It's not just the high cost of accommodation (that's still a couple of kilometers from the venue), but also the fact that every decent restaurant in town will probably be booked out too, and of course with every man and his Jacqui in town, the streets will be impossibly crowded and highly undesirable.

Well done Chester group.

Think people need to think outside the square and maybe book accomodation in the "burbs" on the public transport corridor.

For instance I live in Glen Waverley which is 30 mins from Melb by train (15 by the Freeway) and stacks of good restaurants nearby!

Victoria certainly does have a lot to offer.  Always worth looking in advance when interested in an event held in Vic., this has been scheduled for a long, long time now.  Anyway, me thinks it will be a successful event once again, looking forward to it  :)

I hope the event goes well but the conflict with other prime events is without doubt an impediment to success.

It's very likely that many of the interstate exhibitors from last year will also be unable to participate this year, so the poor choice of timing potentially threatens the event's future viability.

Melbourne hosts a lot of big events and it is not always easy to find a time that does not clash with something else. As has been already pointed out, there was plenty of advance notice, however I do take your point re an earlier post where you mentioned the high cost of accommodation.

Looking at the Crown Metro (for example), there's full availability for every weekend in October except for the one in question, so clearly this is a scheduling stuff-up.

Yeah, can't agree with you Art...

Moto GP last year was held 18th-20th October, 17th-19th this year...

Melbourne International Festival held on 11-27th October, this year 10th to 26th October...

These are the two biggies, same scheduling in conjunction with the Oz hi-fi show, and last year the hi-fi show was so successful they decided to hold it again in Melbourne.  I really don't think this will threaten the event's future viability, nor is a stuff-up.

As for expensive hotel rooms, well, no such thing as a cheap or reasonable priced hotel room in any Australian city!

I'm willing to pay the $400, but all rooms within 1.5km are already booked for that weekend, so for me that's the show stopper.

Any other weekend would have worked, so clearly it's a scheduling stuff up.

Yeah, you really need to book earlier for events in Melbourne, maybe next year brother. I wonder how many of those booked rooms will be at the show?

There are so may places just outside the city that would be only a short tram/train ride.(5-15mins)

Have a look in StKilda

I wonder if Circa is still operating at the prince and if it's as good as it used to be?

it seems it still does

And Albert park, carlton, South Melbourne, port melbourne, fitzroy etc. etc. and all with plenty of eating options which you wouldn't need bookings for.

Maybe this means that conversely, the event is a scheduling success if every hotel within a 1.5km radius is booked....!

Only in dreams.

Anyway, it could be an excuse for me to head to the UK for a few weeks and see the show in Brighton.

haven't been there for a while but just had a look at the menu and who was chefing and I still think it would be pretty good, always a good wine list too. last meal we had there tipped the plastic over $500 but seriously good. we have booked vue de monde this time around, did vue bistro last year and our neighbour who chefs at tetsuya's said his meal at de monde was one of the best he has ever encountered so thought it would be a calm break from dealing with audiophiles all day.

cheers.
