trivas
Hi all I am new here and am looking for some advice on speakers. I am all about listening to vinyl and have recently picked up a dual 704 with Denon DL-110 cartridge and a Sansui amp. I am loving the sound at the moment but wonder if I'm missing out on the speaker side of things. Currently I have a pair of Sonique Sav-4 speakers which I have always been happy with for their original intended purpose of being front speakers for cinema/tv. However I now have a Kef 5.1 set-up for that so the Sonique's are purely used for my music. I haven't been able to find a lot of info about my current speakers so it makes it hard to workout what I would be looking at for an upgrade. Plus I don't know a lot about the technicalities at this stage.... I've seen a set of Tannoy DC2000's come up for sale for $550 (dont know if thats a good price or not but they seem to get good reviews). I wonder if they would be an upgrade or not? I would love to know what I should be looking at as I don't want to waste my time moving sideways or downgrading. Thanks to anyone who could provide some advice.. aussievintage
My advice is listen to as many different speakers as you can. Don't be fooled by price tags. Discover what you like. No rule that says your Sav-4s can't do the job for you, but if you hear something you really like - go for it.
andrewinbriz
I assume you are using the phono input on the Sansui. You might consider a phono preamp, and using a line level input on the amp. What is it that you think you might be missing with your current setup? What do you want to achieve. A long time ago I realized what I valued above all was engagement, musicality. I don't want sterility. So I am happy with vinyl and valves. But I know each to their own, and their choice for themselves is entirely valid. I'd say, work out what you want, and work back. Bear in mind, there is this crazy thing called synergy, how individual components work together to create a musical experience. A forum for your current speaker or amplifier might prove helpful, as over time they would have tried and evaluated almost everything. Enjoy, and good luck. You make a good point, I forgot to mention I am using a Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 pre-amp through the Aux input. I have tried direct to the phono in the amp and I prefer the pre-amp sound. I feel at the moment I think bass is a bit boomy. I played around with pre-amp and amp settings so I'm thinking that maybe 'better' speakers might help get the bass more punchy? I guess I'm trying to work out if I'm chasing something I can't get or is out of my league for $$$$ Sorry, I am new to this so my terminology may not be correct. Move your existing speakers, probably further from any walls etc. Surround them with soft furniture, hang some heavy curtains over solid surfaces, even glass windows
Grizzly
Further to aussievintages' advice, and following on from andrewinbriz, how different speakers interact with your electronics plays a strong part in the sound they'll give- even more so how they interact with your room. Definitely shifting your current Soniques around will change the way the room acoustics play their part and may improve or diminish the feels you get from them. Listening to other speakers as well is great to get ideas on what you like/dislike, ideally done in your room if at all possible (often not sadly). I see you're in Adelaide, I'd be happy to perhaps bring some around for the sake of science/education. Disclaimer- I can't educate but hopefully can help with opportunities for learning. trivas
Grizzly, I think that would be a great idea. If nothing else it gives me something to compare my Sonique's to.
mikizee
Marty Jones, the speaker designer at Sonique now works for VAF as our designer. If you have any specific questions about your current speakers I'd be happy to ask Marty for you.
