TCL Mini LED TVs - anyone checked them out?

Recommended Posts

Hi all -

I'm in the market for a new 75" TV and have been looking at the options in the sub $3k mark.

Seems like the TCL C845 range with Mini LED tech has a pretty good price/performance ratio.  An OLED would be nice but looks like a big jump up in price (eg Sony 77" lists at ~$7k).

I'm not keen on Samsung or LG units due to their operating systems and internet control etc and the Google OS used by TCL and Sony (perhaps others too) looks pretty good.

Any thoughts on the TCL units?

Thanks!

Not an expert but had a good look at the tcl qled. Brighter than an oled, less reflective. Blacks are much closer to oled but still not as good and off axis viewing is a not great.

The miniled is supposed to be the next step up.

The top of the line samsung qled is almost as good as oled and cheaper in the bigger screen sizes.

I picked up a 85c845 2 weeks ago. Was fortunate to get 20% on top of 20% with sounbar purchase, tv came to $2558 which was a bit of a steal.

I'm still tweaking settings to find what I like, almost there. It certainly has the potential for being very bright and has to be toned down a bit. Getting the brightness and contrast correct for me has taken some time.

I was watching the Open, PQ was disappointing but that really was the stream at fault, being a large tv, poor quality is very noticeable. But other viewing has been good, still to try Dolby Vision but need a new 4k player for that.

4k content has been good though I haven't watched many movies yet. Found it to be fine with AFL and F1.

Can't comment on the SQ as I don't use it.

I just replaced my TV, and I looked at the TCL and Hisense minileds.    Both were nice.  Ended up with the Hisense  55U8hau

https://hisense.com.au/product/55-uled-4k-mini-led-tv-series-u8hau/ and love it.

I would imagine the TCL would have been just as good.

I am completely happy with the technology.      You get a huge dynamic range from completely black to shining in your face birghtness.  I first time, in a movie, I saw a spotlight searching in the dark, and as it swung towards me (the camera) I actually found myself squinting at the bright light.    I hear OLEDs are being developed to try and attain such brightness - but when available they will be expensive.

The main downside, is, although the minileds are small, they cannot even approach the resolution of the screen, so you WILL see some spillover from bright objects on a dark background - such as in the credits of a movie, or the smart TV menus and interface.  In practice though, this isn't a bother nor a distraction when watching a real scene in a movie.

Just replaced my Pana 50" plasma in as secondary viewing area (mainly AFL) with a TCL 845 55" in a built in location. Punches well over the price point.

I'm giving up waiting for my  Pana 54" plasma to die so am gearing up for replacement 65" now.         I've really only been window shopping OLED for the last few years but  seriously considering mini-LED and saving ~$2K.

Then again,   it's our primary TV and won't be replaced for 5-10yrs so also thinking just get the bloody OLED so I don't have any regrets.         decisions decisions.

How bright is your room?  Advice I heard is that mini-LEDs are better than OLED in bright situations

Not particularly bright,  but not dark

either.   OLED should be fine.

Get the Oled. The TCL mini led is good but Oled is just better.

Plasma finally died yesterday and I impulse bought a TCL today.   C745 65”,  $1150.    Pretty much identical to the 845 but FALD,  not mini LED.

Probably would have gone for the 845 if there was a good deal going and stock in store though.

Very impressed with it so far.  Really can’t see how 3-4x for OLED is justifiable,  and even questioning if the extra $500 for the 845 would be.    Easily pleased I guess.
