New amp suggestions

Recommended Posts

After relocating from Canada and leaving my hifi system behind, I have finally got around to setting up a new hifi system. I'm building a pair of Trohet's, which are a 5 inch two way stand mount speaker. They are 8ohm nominal impedance with 100 watt power handling.

The Musical Fidelity M6si has been recommended by the designer of the Trohets, and while it seems to be an amazing amp its out of my price range for now. I know the obvious choice is to probably go the M3si but would appreciate getting advice if there are other options worth considering.

I would prefer to spend around $2000 for now and upgrade in the future.

I would prefer to keep the system neutral to warm in sonic character, so anything overly bright is a no go. And do you think its possible to get comparable performance of a Musical Fidelity from a Hypex amp kit? Hopefully this doesn't open a can of worms asking this question.

Saw the build, lovely job mate.

Selby have the Vincent SV 237MK @ $2799 if you want new and it's highly regarded.

The Unison Research Unico integrateds are wonderful IMO, but rarely come up for sale.

Exposure amps also very good and somewhat fly under the radar in Oz.

Best, Phil

you should be able to get a secondhand M6 MF amp for around 2K. That is what I paid for mine

I have been using one for 9 years. It has been a great amp but it is not for everyone. It will not "polish a turd". So if you listen to poorly recorded, bright music, pumped full of EQ, it will sound harsh.  Also the sound will not suit someone who prefers the tube/analogue sound.

The M5Si run at 150 watt so it would also suit. Best to demo one and see if you like it.

Thank you. I'm pumped to have the speakers finished.

I might have to take a listen to the SV 237! Thanks for the tip!

I've heard that before. Do you think there's much difference between the M6 and M6si?

the other thing to consider is your Dac or CD player. Try not to pair any component with the MF that is too lively

Yeah for sure, a member on the forum has reached out selling the Denafrips Hades pre-amp and Thallo poweramp combo. I like what I heard on Jays review. Just hopefully it has enough drive for the Trohets given their low sensitivity. I'll be picking them up in a couple weeks.

Thanks everyone for the suggestion, very much appreciated. I shall report back once I have received the amps and had a good listen.
