trickydicky
hi all after lots of trips to various electronics shops i have finally got my old cd player and network player connected directly to my soundbar that only has hdmi and optical inputs..no headphone jack (i learnt to not bother trying hdmi; it doesn't work). wondering if i get a phono stage whether or not i can simply get an rca to optical converter and that should do the job? I have searched on line and no-one actually seems to say this is possible, although there are converters available (there were also rca to hdmi converters available but they were not usefull for this particular purpose). thanks

I'm guessing your soundbar provides volume control? 1 hour ago, trickydicky said: wondering if i get a phono stage whether or not i can simply get an rca to optical converter and that should do the job? However, you may have a problem with the volume level from vinyl, relative to CD. IOW - find a phono stage with a gain of 46-50dB if you're using a 'standard' (5mV output) MM cart ... and 66-70dB for a typical LOMC.

I have a fairly average cart on a project t t so will check it out

Most budget phono amps (rega, cambridge, thorens etc) seem to have a gain of around 40 dB. Would that be a problem?

Yes, 40dB is the standard MM phono stage gain. It will only require you to turn up the volume control a lot for LPs, compared to CDs ... so you have to remember to turn down the volume, when you switch from LPs to CDP.
