gavtron Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I had a quick demo of the new AKG 712 at Awave on Monday. I compared them to a pair of k702's that were on hand. The DAC was a Lynx Hilo - not sure of the headphone output - some monitoring rack mounted equipment they have installed in the back room / studio. The K712 are a nice upgrade to the K702. There''s more mid range detail, with a deeper overall sound and better tonal balance, a bit more bass (without being bloated) but smoother highs - while still retaining the "air" of the K702. The K712 reminded me somewhat of the HD800 in presentation and it will be interesting to compare them back to back. More interesting will be the new K812 Reference headphones that are going to be released soon Kieron at Awave tells me that the K812 has been priced at about $1.5k in the US, which is a big step up price wise from AKG's other models. I used to own the K702 years ago but found I enjoy the Audeze sound a lot more - but I know a lot of people on here have the AKG 701/2 and I think this upgrade will be an interesting one Cheers, gav. 2
LogicprObe Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I think the 701's are great value, but I'm not sure paying more money is going to glean me any more pleasure. This may all change when I try them though!

This may all change when I try them though! Hey LP. To my ear they were an upgrade in all sq aspects and also had a better fit. I guess it depends on how much they sell for locally - Amazon have them for $400usd + shipping - forgot to ask the price at awave, and they haven't listed it on their website yet. I guess you would need to see if the extra cash was worth the upgrade. They were better than the 702 but didn't make the 702 sound terrible.. 1
husq2100 Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Apparently the K712 pro are pretty much the same as the K702 65th anniversary. Both of which were meant to combine the positives of the K701/K701/Q701. Looking at the price of the K612 Pro, these seem really good value for money. I will be interested to see what the retail price of the K812 ends up being
